looking for cheap ideas for seasonal cabin to avoid rust and smell.

Iron filters seam expensive, thinking of craigs list water softeners and just getting a new one every few years. We bring drinking water just need for shower and dishes. Rental is $400 / season. Alexandria Lake Miltona. Thanks

You can buy one and install it new for 400 more or less. You remove the head and take it home in winter. Pump out the resin tank and you are good to go. Check grains of hardness and iron and compare to rating on softener.

FWIW - we put a waterboss in our new construction cabin 4 years ago. So far no probs, and we have lots of iron. I use iron salt, and did only did a "power clean" cycle once so far, I just learned about it.

We do use all winter though, so it never sits. On sale it was like $400 and change about 4 years ago. good luck.

We use the local Culligan service (western Wisconsin) on a seasonal package for about $250 a season. Non electric, no salt, bypass valve on unit. It is an iron removal tank and looks like a five foot tall scuba tank so it takes very little space. They deliver a different tank about every six weeks from April - October. In late October, they take the last one out and done for the season. It works well and we have no staining on our fixtures from the iron anymore.

One of the big issues we have is limited space. If you have room, there are a lot more options. I have Kinetico at home, and there is no way their units would fit in our small cabin utility area.

As far as the sulfur smell, we had it really bad (even with the Culligan tank) Finally removed the anode rod from the electric water heater and the smell is gone. Might have a shorter life on the heater, but we can live with that.
