Line for Kids Spincast Reel

So i got my boys new rod/reel combos last year after they did quite well on the water last summer. I got them "kid" combos (they r 6 & 7) instead of those toddler character ones. Sat am my son had his line snapped on 2 consecutive casts with big bites using slow death hooks (probably bass) & i know these pre done combos come with the cheapest line possible, any good ideas on what to replace the cheap line with so he no longer (hopefully) has this issue? He caught bass last year on bobber/crawler setups but always get more aggresive fish with the slowdeath hooks that fight harder & are breaking his line, would love some suggestions on good light line for a kids spincast reel. thx so much.

I'd stick with 6-8# Berkly xl leaning more towards the 8 and less towards 10#. At that age, if they are learning to cast, 6# is going to give them much longer casts then 10#. If your going to drag slow death hooks around behind the boat and cast less frequently then I'd go up to 8#. Make sure the drag on the reels is set light enough not to snap whatever line you decide to use. If fish are biting him off 10# isn't going to be much better then 4# due to the depth of the hook into the fishes mouth. I have had 30# power pro snapped on bite offs by bigger fish with teeth. I would say that 8# would suffice for most all around applications.

Berkley nanofill might fit the bill, if you want to spend that much money but you could buy a tensile strength with the same diameter as 8# mono and still have plenty of castability. I am not sure how it would work for you on a closed face reel but it works like a dream on spinning reels. Just a thought.

i put 10 pound stren on the SO's zeb 33s and they cast great - she refuses to give them up and has caught lots of wallys and catfish on them. (rolling eyes smiley)

one thing about spincast reels is you need to check the drag often. the drags seem to tighten on their own.
