R Bend spinners-Why?

a spinnerbait will sometimes roll in the are(summersault)...and when you start to bring it back in, if its an "R" bend it will allow the line to just spin around back to normal.. if you have a twisted eye it will pull the line into the pinch point and possibly damage the line. The advantage of a twisted eye is that you can tie a clip to it... the other advantage of R bend is they often use lighter wire, which gives off a little more vibration.

Deitz, I fish spinnerbaits a lot... and USE A CLIP (or SNAP) for quicker lure changes (I tie all my plastics). The R-bend seems to be very popular now days, for all the reasons you mentioned, but prefer the twist-eye for my snaps.

To use the R-bend, you can do a number of things to give it the benefit of the twist-eye: a small o-ring, a smaoll split ring, or (and what I'm doing) a thin piece of shrink tubing (heated) to make an "eye" in the R-bend. It's working great so far... :-)

or

Is it that R-bends are quicker and cheaper to manufacture?

possible.. but really each has a following that love it for the reasons listed above. It takes only a second to do either..

EDIT-- just checked an interned seller.. $2.69 per 25 for both R bend and closed eye wire forms.. so cost has nothing to do with it.

I lost a lot of really good fish on some spinner baits I had a few years ago breaking, bad batch of bends, in spite of that I feel I catch more Smallies with them than the twist eyes. Twists are fine but do have more hang ups on the cast, for me anyway.
