Help motor problems

Recommended Posts

I have a 1984 50hp evinrude lark outboard motor that ran great, I had it out yesterday morning and it ran good in tha AM then while I was going across the lake it seemed to loose power at wide open. After that when ever I tried to go past 1/4 speed it would boog down. I went back out in the afternoon and it worked great going across the lake, then on the way back the same thing happened it'd bog down at wide open.

Any thoughts???? I'm thinking that it's over heating that's why it works good when I first go out then doesn't when it has been run for a little while.

Thank you.

Is water peeing out the back of the engine? Try having someone squeese the bulb in the gas line when it starts to bog. Is the breather open on the tank? If you idle for a minute or two after it starts to bog does that help , could be gas filter if it does.

When was the last time the water pump was replaced? My motor did the same thing when the impeller was getting to the end of its life, even though it pee'd a fairly good stream. When I opened up the hood I could sense it was overheating slightly.

I looked all over the motor and can't find the hole where the water would come out. I got this boat from my grandparents, it was in their shed for 15years. The motor is a 1984 evinrude 50 hp (it also says Lark on the cover). I had my brother squeze the fuel line ball but it didn't make a difference. That's why I was thinking it was overheating, since it seems to run good when I first take it out.

Got a model number off that motor? I can remember the Lark but last one I saw was in the early 70s?? Late 60s.Maybe a pic? Model # is best.I am almost sure Evinrude quit making the lark,Long before 1984.

Sorry i forgot to mention that I did put new gas in the night before, I added a little seafoam as well. Here's a picture of the motor. Does anyone know where the water should be coming out at? I looked all over and can't find a hole for the pee stream. full-23988-21891-2012_05_10_05_57_28_105

Thanks a bunch for the help.

That early model motor doesn't have the "tell tale" stream. The water comes out from the back of the mid section.

As a precaution I would replace the water pump impeller, it won't hurt a thing and will let you know the issue is overheating or not.

I agree with the advice above.. especially if you don't know the history on the water pump.

It sounds like a fuel issue to me though... some junk plugging a jet possibly. Also highly possible given the history you've provided for this motor.

Well I took it in to a guy in New London, He cleaned the carbs, replaced the water pump impeller and said it ran good. I took it out two days later and it started right away idled great and ran smooth. I ran it for about 10-15 mins the went on fishing, I fished for maybe an hour and wanted to switch spots but couldn;t get the motor started, it would turn over idle for a couple seconds then die. It also sounded like the starter was sticking and not stoping right away. What are you're thoughts? Getting really sick of dealing with a motor that doesn't want to run.
