x1957x
Does a guy have to use all Yamaha oil and filter and if not who makes a good filter and what kind of oil to use. Yamaha filter and oil will break the bank but if need to I will use. Would like to cut the cost if possible seeing how I only put around a 100 hours or less per year.. Thanks
Hookmaster
I have a 1999 F100. I use the Yamaha filters, although if you search you can find some cross referenced ones. I use Mercury 4-stroke oil.
candiru
I think the cheapest I have found so far is a NAPA filter. I should be part# PS1358 That is the one that fit my 50.I have also used Mercury filters that they sell at Fleet Farm and Wal-mart. They were about $8. They list the Yamaha applications right on the box. This same filter has a bunch of applications.
harvey lee
I use Sierra filters and synthetic oil. I have no idea what the cost is compared to the others. I change my filter and oil every 50 hours and that is 3 times a season. The cost of good oil and a filter is nothing compared to a damaged cylinder. boatfixer
I use Wix filters in most everything. Excellent filters. 51358 is the number for yours. As far as the oils go, just make sure to stick with marine 4 stroke. Personally I use mercury. It's a trusted brand and my customers recognize it. fasternu
I had a guy tell me when I asked the same question, "If it is still under Yamaha warranty, use the Yamaha stuff. If not, use the stuff that is cheaper, save yourself some money and the quality is just as good."
