After further use and talking with the wife who is the primary driver, the front fan/AC doesn't work all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but the back Fan/AC does work all the time. When the front AC does work it will not shut off when the key is turned to the off position. I thought this might be a AC low charge issue but the back seats get cold air.

Any ideas

The fan refers to the part that cools the radiator. The blower motor is the part that pushes air through the heating and air conditioning system. I think you are referring to the blower.

If the blower stays on in the high speed setting when the key is turned off and you have manual heater controls than I'm 99% sure the blower motor module is at fault. It has the high speed fan relay built into it and the relay is fed power at all times by the blower fuse located in the under hood fuse block. If the relay sticks in the high position it will allow the blower to run with or without the key on. This is a fairly common symptom.

If you have automatic heater controls I would still bet the blower module is at fault. I think there is a TSB on this and the repair involves something with installing a diode and a new module that comes as a kit from the dealer. I know the full size GM cars for sure have a TSB for this. I have not had any issues just installing a new blower motor module to fix the problem.

Hope that helps.

on a side not the blower does not care if the system is charged or not.

Also, it is very common for the connector that plugs into the module to burn up. New pigtails (the connector with wires) are available. The blower module is located under the passenger side of the dash. once you remove the trim panel from under the dash you will see it.

Jeremy you are right. The blower only runs on rare occasions, Short trip to the store, drive back home, no blower, couple days later it will run again and then it will run for 10+ min. after the key is removed from the ignition.

Guess I'll have to bring it into the dealer for the TSB

Thanks

Actually I believe there is a recall on this. I received one for my Avalanche and they will replace the resistor and the connector if you are in the limits of the extended warranty period. I chose to do my own and avoid the hassle of dropping off and picking up.

EDIT: I just located the letter, it goes to 10 years or 150,000 miles

Actually after reading the letter again, it states it is a

Quote:
( #10240 )- Special Coverage Adjustment - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Blower Not Fully Functional or Inoperative Models: 2003-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban Tahoe 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2003-2006 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL 2003-2007 GMC...

Technically not a recall (so Jer is right) because they will only repair it if you experience problem with it. The phone number on my letter is 1-800-222-1020. They should be able to tell you if yours is covered or not.

To the OP, if your blower stays running you are at risk for a fire. I'd personally get this taken care of ASAP, disconnect the battery or dont park in your garage until its repaired.

I replaced the relay today, had to go to the dealership for the part because it has auto temp.

$115 for the part, not bad, NAPA was $119, still did not work, the 40 amp fuse was blown, replaced that, worked great, two on and off trips later, no AC, pulled the 40amp fuse to check it while the Burb was running, still nothing, later pulled it while it was off and later re installed it. Kind what was done earlier but now works great again. any ideas what caused the shut down again
