Tranny oil pan replacement

Recommended Posts

May not be a big deal for some of the more savvy auto repair guys here, but I am proud to say I replaced the Transmission oil pan and filter on my 01 Dodge Ram 1500 last night. Have done brakes etc but never this, and I can tell you it is an easy job.

Original pan had developed a leaky little rust spot, and needed to be replace - new pan, new gasket, refill w/tranny fluid and we're good to go.

Just an FYI for those who, like me, may not be all that mechanically inclined.

I like to say it as, the sun shines on a dogs a$$ every now and again... does it have the metal washers built into the seal in order to prevent over torquing? I seen that when we flushed my duty after i bought and and thought it would have saved my hiney a few $$$ back in high school when i tried dropping my own fluid once... live and learn!

Yes it is a very simple job and Im not a fan of flushing out a trans. To many stories of trans. problems after a flush.

These are the people that flush there trans after 100,000 miles and have burnt fluid, then wounder why there trans failed. All the clutch material that was in the fluid was flushed out, new fluid in, trans slips. Ford recommends flushing there trans every 30K, severe duty, which is what most people fall under.

Yup, new fluid isnt going to do damge to the tranny. The damage would have already been done, it just lost the metal debris that gave the clutches gripsion. Best to flush and filter at least every 60k.
