2012 NHL Draft

Fri, June 22 at 7pm et/4pm pt

Wild Pick #7

Sounds like lots of talent out there this year, especially at D, so I expect the Wild to get a very good player and very possibly a D.

There are rankings that come out every year but the more I learn about how the draft works the more a realize you have to throw those rankings out the window most years. Yes sometimes they are accurate but most often team draft boards are wildly different from one another. It sounds like after pick #1 no one really knows what will happen, lots of interchangeable talent at the top. Should be fun.

Some player rankings, again take these with a grain of salt.

Still top 3 ISS, I think there are some motivational and work ethic concerns. I think even McKenzie said he could fall out of the top 10, it will sure be interesting to see what the Wild do if he is sitting there at 7. Same goes for Galchenyuk, his game is solid but coming off a bad injury.

Like you mentioned earlier, I see us taking a D, lots of top end D out there.

A good interview here with Fletcher and Flahr talking about the draft. They seem to think that after #1 there are 12-13 guys that could go in just about any spot. No doubt a few are likely to go higher and lower but a lot will depend what everyones draft boards look like.

I'll take Mathew Dumba please, Defense, 20 goals and 37 assists in 69 games... But he is small and we could use a big nasty defenseman..

Man the Oilers are going to be dangerous if Yakupov pans out! Did that conference realighnment ever go through?

Interesting trade bait, but for what? I'd agree on Scandella for sure. We got pretty thin on D-men towards the end of last year after all or our rookies stopped playing above their talent levels.

Seto I bet we give a year. He's shown what he can do. Cullen I wouldn't be surprised if we traded. We've got a couple good centers coming up don't we? Clutterbuck could be worth something. Hard hitting and can shoot the puck.

it said that Cullen has a limited no trade clause but maybe we can unload him off to a Cup contender. I like Seto but he needs all stars around him to make him good and Clutterbuck sucks, if it wasn't for his hussle and hits, he would have no game. His long wrist shots that everyone loves drive me absolutely nuts and I don't like reading about him getting in fights with teamates at practice because he is such a whiner.

I say keep trading for prospects, D or top tier players.

No love for Cal? Where else are we going to find a grinder who actually chips in goals? 19 last year and 15 this year, I love him. Sadly he was our 4th and 3rd leading goal scorer the past two seasons. That is more a lack of scorers than any problem with Cals game. I won't fret if we trade him in a package for something nice but no reason to unload him just to unload him.

A good link if you want to read up on the top 60 prospects.

http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=9825

The Wild are likely grabbing a D in one of Reinhart, Dumba, Reily, Trouba, or Maatta depending on who is available and who they like. Doubtful Murry falls to us but you never know. There could also be an outside chance we take Ceci or Lindholm but those might be trade back senarios.

Something crazy could happen and we might take forward too, but I would probably take one of Forsberg or Galchenyuk falling to us or if we really like the skillset of Teravainen or Grigorenko above what is available to us at 7. It should be fun.

I think Cal is overated, I have a love hate thing with him, I love the hussle and checks and the smack talking but he always turtles up and for every goal, he has 10 wrist shots that miss high and fly out of the zone. I like him for a 3-4 line guy but not on the 2nd line.

I agree and don't want to just unload him, he should have some decent value to the right team. So should Cullen and so should Seto but that doesn't seem to be the case. Time will tell!

+20.

Getting back to the draft (and hoping there isn't a lockout) I can't see the Wild taking anything but a defenseman. From the video's I saw I like Rielly and Dumba.

Offensive type defenseman are harder to find IMO. Good stay at home D-men can be picked up pretty reasonably in FA.

I still could see the Wild trading the pick as they are in that "area" of the draft where only a couple of the bigger name prospects are left and someone may want to move up and grab a player.

Reily and Dumba do looks like they have the goods in the O-zone. The more I ready about this Ceci kid I like him too, he big and put up very good numbers for a D-man, he also sounds pretty good in his own zone. I think those might be the weak points for Reily and Dumba. Trouba and Maata look good too, but they dont' have high end offence like the others. Oh so many choices!

So we got us a Dumba! I am half excited and half scared but I think that is a good thing. They showed Fletcher talking to Toronta (5) so I kind of wonder if Reily was our guy but both of them have high end offensive potential. The thing I like about Dumba is he is very much willing to throw his weight around, Riely is more one dementional. From scouting report Dumba does get a little "dumba" every now and then and takes himself out of position try to make a big play in the o-zone or make big hit. Either way he a very cool prospect with crazy up-side, very well could end up being one of the best players in this draft.

The cool thing about Dumba is he puts the puck in the net, in a very competetive WHL he scores 15 times and had 26 pts in his pre draft year. In his draft year he put up 20+37=57 in 67 games. I think the top scoring D man in the draft. Although 1 or 2 guy drafted later might have had more overall points with a ton of assists. It should be noted Dumba played on a weak team who didn't even make the playoffs.
