Milfiol

Anybody else notice the explosion of the milfoil and curly pond weed this year on their lake?

The lake I'm on is almost completely choked out already with these two weeds.

I'm guessing that the NO snow thing on the ice last winter caused the bloom to start so much earlier than norrmal.

Then the no rain to start out the spring probably didn't help either.

Now I'm not saying its a bad thing cause the fish are loving it at least that what it seems like up hear. Bass are happy in it and the pike are ambushing all the little panfish that try and hide along the edges of the weeds.

I know it can't be much fun tubing across this stuff or worse yet wiping out on skies on the weedy stuff.

Well we will sit and see what happens as the summer progresses and the green stuff grows.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how bad it gets later on in the summer, if the monsoon season ever ends grin. A few of the smaller lakes north of me are already choked out, with a normal winter and spring they dont start to get bad until about the middle of june but not this year.

it's kind of confusing what is really best for the fishery

10, 20 years ago it seems we all were bemoaning the fact that the carp were uprooting all the water plants that were essential for baitfish and gamefish fry and now we have an abundance of invasive plants that have no trouble staying ahead of the feasting carp

so is the milfoil overall good or bad for our MN fisheries? that is the question

I really haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary around mankato...About the only thing unusual is the weed line appears to be deeper this year. Seeing weed growth out to 12-14 feet, where previous years (if i can remeber correctly) was only about 8' or so. But on some lakes around here, tetonka for example, the weeds are quite typical and normally follow 12-14'.

On Francis yesterday, i couldn't believe how clear it was compared to other local lakes. Don't think milfoil is present though.
