Boat decking...cedar vs plywood

RJMOEN

Question

I have a 16' modified V flat-bottom boat. I currently have a piece of treated 3/4" plywood in the bottom..but it is a a foot or so short of covering the floor. Debating on cutting a 1/4' piece to cover the gap....OR saw a boat recently on a 4sale site with cedar planking the whole length of the floor. This looks awesome. Anyone know how long cedar might last or how much the weight difference is? Thanks

The weight difference is alot from ceader to plywood speacilly when it gets wet. Personally I would go with aluminum. I did my whole boat floor in aluminum and will never go back to wood.

Just plan on going directly on top of supports? that go from left to right. Why shouldNT I use treated on aluminum? Chemical reaction? Thats what we've used for years. Thanks

Around 2004 the Us and Canadian lumber industries discontinued pressure treated lumber containing arsenic as a preservative. The new method uses a chemical called alkaline copper quat.(ACQ)When ACQ treated lumber gets wet the fasteners can corrode quickly.ALUMINUM is especially susceptible to corrosion by ACQ.Use fasteners labeled for use with ACQ.Happy building!c63
