just an introduction ...

Recommended Posts

Today I picked up an old compound for 25 bucks ... Went strait to the local shop and bought an ams pro retrieve. Then went home and installed it and went back to the archery shop to get a new loop put on. Am I missing anything? I have a boat ... But I am thinking of just walking the crow river banks around the highway 7 area to cut my green bow fishing teeth. Is this an ok plan? Are the river banks considered public? Thanks in advance for the help! Hope to post pics of my first fish soon.

You're set to start! Its a blast! I keep an old cooler to put the fish in. I only shoot from shore right now. Look for smaller creeks/drainage ditches etc. they are starting to spawn by me, I see them all over rutting around. Be patient! I threw a ton of arrows before I made a connection! Have a plan on what you will do with anything you shoot.

Aim low, then aim lower! Good luck, always take your fish and make a good effort to shoot any fish that pull off the arrow again. To many guys around my area leave their fish lay and I have to pick them up for them. Good luck!

Chuckwagon;

I too live in chaska and have bowfished for a couple years now. It is alot of fun! No thats an understatement, its addicting! Right now I do alot from shore but am working on getting my boat back running and once I do your more than welcome to come along in that as well as any shore shooting I do.

There are 3 spots I usually go on a regular basis in chaska to shoot. Coopers Clayhole, Firemans Park, and Lake Gifford. I dont recommend shooting at the dock by the townhomes on coopers clayhole though... I park on the road on the north side and walk in.

Im off fridays and saturdays and am out of work each day by 4pm usually.

send me an email if you like and we can set something up, [email protected]

Hit bassman up, he needs some one to show him how to shoot ;-) Just kidding bud! I believe within city limits, if it discharges a projectile its not legal (gun/bow) Doesn't make since, but I believe that is the way it is, be to check with your local CO and see what he or she says, and if possible, get a written answer... especially if its a yay rather than a nay...

you know I'll have to check, know you cant shoot a firearm within city limits but I'd be curious to see why you cant bowfishing being that the arrow is tyed to a string.

Kunz;

from what I saw with you this weekend your best aiming skill was with a flashlight, hah :-)

Nice fish JK, Im coming down I think thursday evening so we are gonna have to put the hurt on them! Im working on building a homemade bowlight so we'll have to try that out too!

Also I got it in writing today that it is ILLEGAL to shoot a bow in chaska city limits, that said apparently I've been fishing illegally the past 2 years... looks like Im gonna have to fine some new shore spots outside chaska and get my boat ready alot sooner :-)

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
