When is it time to replace intake gaskets?

Okay, here's the deal.

I have a 2002 Grand Prix with the 3.8L supercharged motor. Recently it started misfiring badly.

It's in the shop today getting new plugs, wires and coils... but my mechanic raised concerns that there is a little puddle of coolant near the gaskets. Could leaky intake gaskets be the cause for the spark plugs fouling out?

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm curious if I should consider fixing this before the problem gets any worse? If not, how do you know for sure when it is time to replace them?

It's a common problem with this motor. I had a 97 that I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets twice on. Check your oil to see if it looks milky. That would be water/coolant getting into the oil, which obviously is not a good thing.

You probably had a 3.1 liter which had its own set of problems with the lower intake gaskets. The 3.8 liter has an issue with the upper plenum rupturing which causes an extreme coolant loss internally. This usually results in one or more cylinders hydro locking. The external leak could be in between the throttle body and the plenum, which is pretty common. The plenum would be replaced, or should be replaced if it has not already been replaced.

If the leak is from the lower intake and on the drivers side than the lower intake gaskets still need to be replaced and again replacing the plenum at this time would be a wise choice.

If the leak is on the passenger side than I would be suspicious of either the coolant nipple or elbow (I don't remember what year they switched) that is in the lower intake right above the water pump.

It was the 3.8 (not supercharged). The lower gaskets had broken down similar to the problem they had on the 3.1's and slowly leaked coolant into the oil... twice.

Ted4887 said that he had the supercharged 3.8. This engine does not have the plastic plenum with the leak problem at the EGR port. I have seen a couple SC engines with intake leaks, typically external. Do a pressure test and find out where and why before just throwing parts at a perceived problem. Just my opinion.

Thanks a lot guys! I'll get it pressure tested next week and see what the guys say. I've had bad experiences dealing with this stuff, and just want to see if I'm being fed a line of carp, or if the mechanic is truly right about it needing to be replaced. A lot of my hesitation comes because it's a new mechanic that I've never dealt with. Will probably get a second opinion on it, just to make sure.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
