Any input on the sealed ones vs the ones with the grease zerks?

From what I remember, all the ones that were replaced on my trucks were sealed, but I since switched to another shop and they are putting on zerk ones from Napa. The zerks dont seem to last as long.

i have had a really bad string of luck with NAPA parts lately... I just re did my u joints, ball joints, and tie rod ends on my 1 ton this past weekend, went with all moog parts with a lifetime replacement warrenty. Give everything a couple bumps of grease every five k or so and they should last a long time...

would it be best to just do them at the same time? If you find the right parts store, they will rent the tools out to you to make it much easier... Advanced rents the tools, you have to pay full price for them up front, then its a full refund when you return them... so its free...

i'm really starting to think Napa parts are not worth the box they come in... truck threw the code for the same dam glow plug, that was just replaced for the second time two weeks ago....

I honestly feel their parts quality has declined considerably from the past. I now consider Advanced Auto parts and O'Reilly to be better or Carquest. I had a Napa shop install and balance new napa ujoints on my Ram and after few thousands of miles and $ 360 spend I had to put new ones.

when i mentioned to the shop owner that I was starting to sense a trend with these napa parts, he just kinda grinned and basically agreed with me, I suppose they try to keep the business in town, but i never have had the problems when i bought at carquest, and when i go to advanced, i choose the products with a lifetime warranty whenever i can... and I seem to have a lot less problems...

Valve,

Going after the front axle joints this time.

Can't find a sealed one for the outer axle, only zerk even from carquest and advanced.

I got Moog (formerly federal mogul) for the fronts.

I also priced the Moog front bearing and it was $110 cheaper than napa for HD.

We pretty much only used Napa for filters (except fuel filters as they would crack at the base) as we had big issues with police cruiser fuel pumps from Napa. Ended up going back to Ford as you figure the time it takes to drop a tank a couple times to replace the pump it pays for itself in the end. The one thing that i always go back to on the sealed vs. zero type is that most heavy trucks run zerk type so they can be greased. We had fire trucks with a couple hundred thousand miles on them and never touched ujoints except to grease. They might have had the engine or trans gone through once or twice with no u joint replacements. Federal Mogul was the best and now that they are Moog, you are still getting the best i feel.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
