half-dutch
Anybody seen any barn swallows yet?It is still real early for them yet, but there is an old farm saw that when the barn swallows were back you could plant corn, which when I was a boy was generally the first week in May back down in NW Iowa. They are planting corn earlier these days than they did back then. I was wondering whether the swallows moved up their migrations, too. Sturg
Do the barn swallows have a colored breast? I saw this swallow this morning, not sure of the species.
LeeKen
Nice shot of a tree swallow. The barn swallows do have the orange/tan underside.
Dotch
Saw our 1st barn swallow of the season this morning. Won't be long and they'll be building their mud nests in the lambing barn.
IL Res
Barn swallows arrived here in NE ILL last week. They are already building nests underneath our concrete piers in Waukegan Harbor. They are pretty fearless little fellows and could care less about human presence. Always their arrival coincides w/ appearance of winged insects. We now have both. They are on their way. I also noticed alot of north-bound Common loons the last few weeks. Usually in groups of 3-7 birds each, they are in one big hurry north.
