Transducer placement

Wish-I-Were-Fishn

Question

Installing a si transducer on my Alumacraft boat. Instructions say it should at least 15" away from the propeller. That distance places it right where my trailer bunk is. How far outward can I move this and still have it in the water? I'm thinking of just to the right of the speedo pickup (see picture).

Move the winch post back a little. No need to have the bunk extend past the end of the transom. Then you can put the ducer where it needs to be, on the mounting board. You may need to try it out and adjust position more than once. I get good readings at 28 mph on my Alumactaft Classic 165 tiller.

I wouldn't sweat the 15" from the propeller (unless you're planning to look at your SI while you're backtrolling).

Side-to-side boat rocking from waves or boat wakes can really make SI images distorted and confusing. Mounting the transducer on the outside part of the transom will accentuate this problem.

When we're installing SI, we tend to inward towards the center of the boat unless there is an obviously better location. That tends to be the best location for the best readings .......

I asked about the 15 inch rule on the Yahoo Unofficial HB Forum a couple years ago and the HB rep informed me that this rule is for inboard motors, you can move it closer to center with an outboard as long as it does not interfere with the water intake for cooling.

You should check out that site, lots of good info. on there and if you join (it's free) they will answer posted questions.
