Fish-n-Freak
Tommy you speak the truth! We are buying lures that we think are great looking, and have these fancy color changing paint jobs. I feel that any lure that is worked right in the area of an active fish will do the trick. Some of these fancy lures are also very well make and work very well, but it's not the paint that catches the fish. A lure becomes one of my favorites (a go to lure) by how it works, not how it looks. I have a bunch of Jackpots, and I pick the ones that I know will pop and walk the way I want them to. I grab a bucktail that I know the blade will spin on, and I grab a crankbait that I know will work in the given conditions. Color is one of the items I look at when picking out a lure, but I would rather have an old broom handle that catches fish, instead of a pretty lure that doesn't do it's job. That's my $.02Steve
MT Net
Hey, those lures are irresistable to pass up on the racks. All sorts of nice colors to attract us. Throw 3 or 4 in the basket and head for the check out clerk. LOL Just can't help ourselves! Artistic painters who apply those dazzling colos need to pay their bills too. Stock up, buy some beautiful baits, makes a nice wall hanging display. They also make for a great trophy too.
Jeff S
Great post Tom!!!You can have the best looking lure ever made but if you ain't throwing it where they live you lose!I prefer to have a few "old reliables" and constantly work on improving my boat control than having the best looking box of baits money can buy! DUCKJ
You know what they say about flashy lures. The only thing they catch more of other then fish, is fisherman.
TomWehler
How many you guys really believe that a BIG o'l [PoorWordUsage]ed off hungry Musky or Pike can really zero in on the fancy paint jobs?I'm talking about the artsy stuff that is getting everyones CA$H.BIG TIME!!!Come on now, we all have bought some? Haloform, Tiny scales, eyes, fins, smiles,... I believe that Large or small eyes might be a big help. Also the flash of a belly or contrast to the sky above like blue or black, but all this other stuff is for the eye of US!LOLFun to look at and buy, but the fish I bet could careless. They just want to kill something and eat it. Put a beat to dump Depth Raider, Phantom, Creeper, Jackpot in the right place at the right time and BINGO, it gets Inhaled!!! Ciso, Perch, Sucker...Bold Orange, Green Dot...Red, Silver, BLACK...Jailbird...Firetiger...For many, many years Simple things have boated most fish for me. But, I have ALL of the above mentioned stuff!WHY do I keep doing this?LOL How many of you all agree or disagree with any of what i have mentioned? Fun to see the outcome? Keep on rock'en! Guest
I agree as well. However, I did get alot of ribbing from my buddies, when I took an 8" Reefhawg in chartruese color. They come from the factory with black dots.I removed the black dots and put on flor. orange dots and a big smily face on her.Boated a 49" on LOTW with it 2 years ago.........Other than that, I think most of the fish are afraid of this goofy, obnoxious color pattern.......But it does make a good conversational piece.........I'm mostly very big on neutral colors, and focus my attention on presentation.------------------Let 'em go so they can grow!!! guideman
Hey guys,I have been muskie fishing since 1960 and in all those years, very few "NEW"baits have come out. They say it's new or different, but most of them are just an old lure style, in a new package. Gliders glide, jerkbaits dive, spinners spin, crankbaits wobble and topwaters..you get the idea. Soft plastics are probably the biggest change in muskie fishing these days, Iknow almost everybody I take out has at least one Bulldawg in their box now. The way I see it, buying pretty looking baits is part of the fun, even if they never catch a fish. I own about 3 or 4 hundred baits, I maybe use 25 of them on a regular basis, but you just gotta have them, it's part of the mastique of being a muskie fisherman. By the way, have you guys seen that new"Warbull", it's the next in a long line of "New Hot Baits" you got to have. Should I buy 2 or 3 mmmm.....? ------------------Terry "Ace" Sjobergaceguideservice.comMuskies and More.NPAA #278Pro Staff Member.Catch-n Tackle.CKat Custom Muskie rods.Bearpaws custom Plastics.Ohio Pro Lure.Muskie Nut Tackle.Big Chimney Muskie Baits.Photon Lures. Big Roy
I have been fishing with Bob Mehsikomer for 25 years and when I first met him he would take Reef hawgs, Suicks, or Swimm Whizzs and spray paint them on the casting deck of his boat because they did not make bright colored baits at that time, he would let them dry for about 5 minutes and cast them..and he caught more fish than anyone! Also a trick he showed me back then is when you buy a new lure you take sandpaper to it and make it look "used" he said that these jerk baits are wounded and they should not look healthy.I still till this day spray paint my lures and I never throw a jerkbait (Odyssey's included) without sanding them a little. TomWehler
Hi Big Roy Totally agree!!!I remember a long time ago Big Bob saying he needed to stop at the Hardwear store before they hit the lake. Then I seen his lures and knew what he ment?No one had what he had lure wise nor did they have the wacky patterns he had.Learned a lot from him over the years going way back to Thunder on the Water... To this day I ding up and re-paint up most all my stuff.Looking for an edge over everyone else, plus it is fun.More Cheewed, rocked scrapped and timber dings a lure has the better.Sand Paper idea sounds good, but I have two Golden Retrievers?LOLWhile I'm changing out hooks in Spring or any time really on our deck, they seem to always run off with a few lures. No hooks in them of course. This has become sort of a game we play.I get them back after two, three or five mintutes of Homer J & Barney Mauling time and I'm good to go!Customized!!!! Good to see you all having fun with this as that is what it is all about. Keep on Rock'en! Tom
DUCKJ
Hey Ace, You are wright about the Wabull (Walking Bullhead). This bait will go from side to side and up and down. Some of the greatest action ive seen in a bait and it drives the fish nuts. We cought a lot of fish on the prototypes last summer. This is a bait that has to be in your box.Happy HuntingDuck
MT Net
Ah! the secrets out! Your own customized scented baits. A little dog slobber must be what the fish want! Great tip on the cutome paint jobs, thanks!
guideman
Hey Duck,I was supposed to get some wabulls from Caddy last summer, I'm still waiting on them....------------------Terry "Ace" Sjobergaceguideservice.comMuskies and More.NPAA #278Pro Staff Member.Catch-n Tackle.CKat Custom Muskie rods.Bearpaws custom Plastics.Ohio Pro Lure.Muskie Nut Tackle.Big Chimney Muskie Baits.Photon Lures. Esoxmn
Many of these new baits are made to catch fisherman not fish.
Big Roy
Tom I must know you, I was very involved with Thunder on the water and also I was a WPMA judge, in fact I was on a few thunder shows and you can see the spray cans on the deck.Keep sanding those lures
muskymike
I think the reason I buy all the lures I do is because I'll boat a fish on them.OK, admittedly you have to forget about the first year or so as an "official" musky lure purchaser. Buying every type and color your stretched wallet can handle.Do you remember the day you took the pledge? You know, to spend hours on the lake day in and day out chasing fish. Hours and thousands of dollars in the stores accumulating tackle, equipment, electronics, etc. Not to say a new lure automatically means you'll boat a fish on it immmediately. With a little persistence, you catch fish. The moral of the story. Buying a lure makes me smile, a little part of me knows I just caught another fish. I think I'll go buy one right now, and one every two weeks or so, that should get me to June 5th...that will add...what...about eight more lures or so to the box. It's the price we pay to catch a fish in the off season. Hey, it's a lot cheaper than a herion addiction and is a bigger rush![This message has been edited by muskymike (edited 01-19-2004).]
DUCKJ
Ace, you may never get one if you dont keep bugging him. Keep posting on his HSOforum and maby, just maby you will get one by opener.LOL esoxmn, I can asure you the wabull is made for catching fish. We had a great prototype year last summer and thats why they are on the market this year. If they didnt produce they would not have been made to sell.Happy HuntingDuck
MT Net
I just got back from Thorne Bros. I needed parts to build my leaders, and tip-up quick strike rigs. Row after row of baits...I had an urge to grab more baits. I fought off the urges to buy...OK I am weak...I bought a big purplish spinnnerbait...dump, now I need another tackle box... DUCKJ
In hear ya MT NET, my wife hates me going to the expo's and sports shows. she tells me i spend way to much and that there is no way i can use all them lures. she's probably right but ill never tell her that.Happy HuntingDuck
TomWehler
Maybe get the wife or girl friends into the action also.My Bonnie has her own slection of many, many lures.Dose quite well actually , dispite her nick name of Bonnie "No Fish" Nielsen...Nice stash of quality lures: Hair, Jerks, Cranks, Gliders, Custom Spinner biats and a huge slection of Walleye Jigs. Not to even mention the fantastic stash of Pike Spoons and Bass baits.I even gave her a section the hang the BIG stuff on at the cabin? We have fun together shopping for and buying NEW things. She has a real savvy sence when it comes to making deals at Thorne's!Other cool things is if I'm in need something she has, no problem, as she most likely has it? What an easy person to shop for at Hoilday time, Birthdays and other EASY to forget deals like Anniversarys?Nothing says "I love you" or "I'm Sorry Sweetie" quite like a 8 inch Reef Hawg or Creeping Tom! LOLGood fun, keeps the peace in the family, adds just that many more lures, leaders, rods and all that good Musky stuff into the mix and the sport needs more women anywho!Just a thought, it works for us!
