You like Bass? Come to BlackHawk Lake in Eagan!

I also posted this in the shore-fishing forum, but I figure I'd post it here too. BlackHawk Lake in Eagan, as with all lakes in Eagan, are restricted to shore-fishing and non-motorized boats only (you may use a trolling motor however).

I have caught more trophy (or close to trophy sized) bass here than I have anywhere else, and this is just some local small lake! I have enclosed a photo and a video of such bass, and the size is fairly consistent with what I normally catch at this lake. These two are whoppers, never did get a size reading but you could make guesses I suppose. They don't get much smaller here!

Nice fish. Just to let you know bass season is closed until May 26. Not sure if those were caught last summer. Just thought I'd give you a heads up just incase.

Video is date coded 2011, Also In the above pic he's got a bobber on. Im sure you were just trying to be helpful but no sense in bouncing on people it gets old

Sorry, I should have mentioned that yes indeed these were from last year. The bass in the first picture was caught early June on a hot mid-day. The one in the video was caught in early October. September and October, lures are your friends like Mepps and Spinners!

But live bait is amazing during the peak months.

you know you're fishing in Eagan when you reel in a side salad with every fish. and if it wasn't for the bass, there would be no point in fishing anywhere in the south metro.

yeah, i know it's been a warm spring but not that much slop growing yet. those fish pictures aren't from the closed season in 2012.

PAK, do you have a canoe or small jon-boat? Lots of small lakes around there. might be fun puddle jumping. Plus in the summer you will be able to fish the outside edges of those milfoil beds. Good luck

I have an old beat up canoe that probably only has one more summer left in it, although I really want to invest in one of those Sevylor inflatable fishing boats, they seem pretty neat.

I love fishing in Eagan for the bass, Fish lake and BlackHawk are just my two favorites, but yeah there's a whole bunch of smaller "ponds" around this area that I've had luck at. Haven't even tried them all yet! Good luck to you as well

It "used" to be a good bass lake. 7 years ago, I used to bass fish that lake and fish for colorful sunfish. One year, I remember 3 guys coming in and keeping almost every bass they caught. It was sad to see. Called TIP and that was that. Since then, I never went again.

Hmmm, that does sound disappointing for you. Maybe you should consider trying again? I've been fishing BlackHawk for 3 years now, and I've never been skunked. I would say in a 3-hour period per visit, I catch probably 5-6 bass, with at least 1 of them being the size of the one in my picture.

I also catch a lot of big bluegill, and when I feel like it sometimes I'll get a Pike along the way. From my experience this is by no means a dried up lake. I go there practically every other day during in-season up until I can't take the cold winds anymore, and most of the few fisherman I see only keep the smaller bass.. which I think is fine.

It is unfortunate when you see people take in more than they should, or keep the larger breeder fish, but that's going to happen everywhere in isolated incidents.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
