knipex hook cutter

I purchased a Knipex spring loaded hook cutter at Thorne Brothers in Blaine Mn amd paid $79.99 for it. It is very nice but I was shopping at Home Depot and found the same tool for $49.95. I really wished I would have researched this before making the purchase. I could have purchased a couple more lures with the savings.

It was the exact Knipex I purchased. I know what you mean about the cheaper ones though, I have a Rapala hook cutter and yes it does work but when youre alone its tough because it has to open so far.

I will say I can chop a 6/0 heavy duty catfish hook with little effort using a pair of $50 snap-on side cutters. Same hook left a dent in a cheap pair i picked up for less than 10 bucks. In some ways I think the knipex jobs are bit of overkill.

The snap ons are another good brand. I would say there is a huge difference between the 10 dollar ones and the significantly more expensive ones for sure.

I have been looking at getting a good pair for the reasons mentioned. When hooks and hands are involved its probably not a place you want to go cheap.

Try a pair of Klein linemans pliers. They run about $35 bucks and are pretty deadly on hooks. The only problem with them is they are a little thick at the end so if the fish is tight to your hand it would not be the best tool to have.

I consider myself the weekend warrior. I get a decent amount of Muskies in the boat a year. Of those maybe 2-3 need a hook cut. So the 40 dollar pair I bought 7 years ago had held up well. If you are a guide and catching 70 fish a year then maybe bet the best brand....
