I am looking at putting a wall mount lp heater in my 6x8 well insulated permy

I don't really know if you just hang these on the wall or cut out wall for venting?

Looking at a small one with BTU of 10000, 3 temp settings, will this be warm enough?

also blue flame vs. infrared which is better?

The ones I am looking at are "vent-free" can I still run this and sleep in it if it is just mounted to the wall?

Let me know, thanks everyone!

read this on a review of an infrared one I am looking at, seems pretty insightful and applicable to ice house.

"I purchased this heater for my small work shop ( 10 X 12 ). The installation and gas line hook up was fast and simple. The copper line, fittings and valve cost just under $5o.oo. The building is constructued of 1 1/2 " thich aluminum and styrofoam panels and holds heat fairly well. Since the heater is non-vented I have to keep the windows open slightly due to oxygen depletion. The buzz is great but the pilot light goes out , lol. I should have gone the extra work and installed the vented unit. The pilot flame is exposed and vulnerable to blow out from even the slightest breeze but it is quick and simple to re-light. Great little heater for the money and cheap to operate."

I put an 18K Btu unit in my 14x22 garage, housewarmer brand, NorthernT, It is direct vent, has infinite thermostat settings. It does well at heating, never had it turned all the way up. Even at the low setting, it is working great. It has an internal, small blower to move some air around. I will be installing a separate fan for more circulation. It came with good instructions for installation, templates, etc... no issues. Only need to purchase a tube of hi-temp cement for the exhaust vent.

I recommend a vented unit for safety reasons. I believe the non-vented units are legal to sell, but do not meet standard building codes, so illegal to install.

Vented units run $350 to $400 more per unit, than non-vented. That is the kicker, the attractive price. Good luck.

I have a 6x8 and use a small Mr. heater 10K BTIU wall mount. I sconstantly get cooked out of there when I keep it on constant "low" so you shoulnd't need anything bigger. Ventless will consume O2 so I mounted mine under a window to ghetto-vent it and I also use a CO detector as a precaution (never had it trip yet).

I'm not crazy enough to sleep in there with the heater on however.

I've considered dumping it for an IR unit that would run off my Honda but I'm notoriously cheap and won't upgrade until what I use doesn't work any longer or I decide it's time to upgrade the shack. I might consider sleeping in it if I changed to an IR but I don't fish outside of the Metro much and prefer the warm-cozy I have at home.

Keep in mind that an unvented heater discharges water vapor also and if you have cool surfaces it readily condenses and drips. You still need ventilation or the heater will burn out all the oxygen in the house. The good ventless heaters detect low oxygen and shut off.....the bad ones...well....you might be sleeping a lot longer than you intended, if you get my drift.

For a house that size, and well insulated, have you considered the Buddy heater? I know some guys have had issues with them, but in a house without a draft you shouldn't have any problem with it staying lit. You'd also have the advantage of being able to take it with you when you leave, so it wouldn't get stolen. You can hang them on the wall or just set it on the floor.

We have a 10,000 BTU ventless for a 14-foot trailer we converted to an ice house. It doesn't have much insulation and plenty of draft coming in, and we get cooked out fairly easily.

I would think in a 6x8 house that's well insulated you'd cook in no time with a 10K unit, even on low.

if you buy a wall mount i would go with the blue flame over the infrared. i had a big vent-less wall mount in my 8x12 and it cooked me out all the time. i also had no problem sleeping in it either. i did put 2 of those little circle vents in there for safety but it seemed to burn very clean.

Be safe, do not use a vent free heater. I have a 6x8 and I use a 12,000 BTU vented heater. Watch that on line auction site and you can pick up Orbis brand fairly cheap because they changed the name. You can use a smaller heater if you never open the door but I run tip ups a lot and the in and out changes a lot of air. Just think how big a door is compared to the house, thats a lot of square footage to open up.

I have a 7x14 winnebago fish house im looking into getting a wall mounted heater that i can keep on while i sleep in the shack. My fish house is not extremely well insulated and there are lots of windows. From what I've read on here its smart to go with a vented heater and blue flame is getting recommendations. Just doing a quick google search it seems this kind of heater retails from 500-1000 bucks! Is this really what to expect for price on these? I was hoping to find something in the 150-300 range. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to look at purchasing a heater and possibly a store where i could get a knowledgeable person to talk to about it and a good deal? That would be great! Thanks in advance for any input
