Brown rice vs White rice

Recommended Posts

RH1, I don't know about the food value of the other Rices, but I eat them regardless because I enjoy the texture and especially the taste differences.

There are constantly new 'studies" performed on the value of Whole Grain vs. "white"--especially on Wheat for Bread--lately, a study resulted in new "facts" that the more "whole" a grain remains, the less your body will benefit from it--mostly due to how hard the Whole grains are to digest and absorb into your system. Go figure. Not sure if this applies to Brown Rice as well...

most of my life i was only concerned about how things taste. flavor is what it's all about. it was interesting that when i had roasted chicken with brown rice and kimchi it felt to me the brown rice didn't go well with that combination. then yesterday when i used the leftover brown rice with hamburger, onions, shredded carrots, mushrooms, and squash it went perfect with it. i added, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil also. so yes it was jazed up a bit but with beef it seemed better to me. a lot of this is personal taste for sure.

still researching all this, but i will incorporate brown rice in more of my meals but will give other rice's a shot as well. i have used wild rice in stuffing, sausage, side dishes, stuffed peppers and i love it in all of those. however it does not go well with kimchi. white all the way with kimchi. good luck.

We've switched over to the higher grain type foods everywhere we can. whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, brown rice, etc. I will say that after a couple of months of making brown rice, I don't miss the white at all. The fact that it takes longer is my only gripe, but you just have to plan ahead a little more.

We make a lot of mexican dishes and use brown rice for that. We also do a 3/4 brown rince & 1/4 wild rice quite a bit for different dishes. Like that combo a lot.

Not to throw too much cold water on brown rice but if you have young kids you probably shouldn't be feeding them brown rice or products made with brown rice syrup because the hulls collect the poison arsenic:

We mix white and wild rice together and cook with chicken stock instead of water and it can't be beat.

Red Beans and Rice you say? Do you have a recipe for that...that you wouldn't mind sharing? I had that once about 100 years ago out in Calif. and I never forgot it, it was great. I've tried to duplicate it over the years, but it just never happens....maybe it's just something from my memory that can never be duplicated? 100 years is a long time!

I know im late to this topic but here is a tip for you guys that are getting into brown rice. Use a 50/50 blend of brown to white rice but tye trick is to soak the brown rice for 30 mins before cooking, after soaking mix in the white rice and make sure to rinse all the starch out of the rice, the water should run clear after rinsing the rice. Then you can just cook the blend like you would do white rice.

Rh, I didnt know you ventured out my way to get your korean fix, if your looking for another store just go south on 65 for a few more miles into heights the store is right next to harbor freight tools. I usually do my shopping over on brooklyn blvd at sun something? cant recall the name lol they have a good selection of meats.
