Through Hull Transducers

dfv87

Question

I am wondering if I can use a through hull transducer for my Aluminum boat? Is this a dumb question? Reasoning is we have a really shallow channel on our lake and every summer we beach the boat on the sand bars and I always worry about catching it. another buddy snapped his ducer off and had to buy a new attachment... I am going to buy a new locator and thought of a through hull system versus the outside one. Can I do that?

You can install thru hull transducers in aluminum hulls, I have done many. It seems what you want to do requires a"shoot through the hull" transducer, a much different transducer. None I have seen are compatible with a metal hull, the sonar is unable to pass through the metal, at least not vary well, giving a very poor unreliable return signal. True though hull tansducers don't really work well with boats that are trailered unless great care in placement is taken to prevent contact with the trailer. They should never be allowed to contact the bottom, this can cause hull distortion, leaks and potential sinking. Transom mount is your best choice, wrecking them on the beach is a risk you have to accept.
