Anchoring down hub shacks.

After my buddy getting a hub shack and having using it once, what are you guys doing to Anchor down you're hub/popup shacks?

On our first time out we were playing with the joke of a tie down strap that was sent with the pop up, and I though why in gods name wouldn't the manufactures of pop ups just send 4 six foot ratchet straps with the anchors to secure the pop up instead of tinny dump rope? I wana say you gan pick up a set of four straps for around $10 or less.

Is anyone using ratchet straps to ancher the pop ups down, or is there something better to use out there?

I do a couple things.

1. screw in the corners/sides of the house with ice screws

2. when you set the house up, be mindful of the wind direction and don't set up broadside into it (i have a rectangular qf6, obviously wouldn't matter with a square)

3. if i can drive out, position the car as a windbreak and tie a rope around the hub/s facing the wind and onto the roof rack.

4. if i am dragging out, tie the ropes to the auger, weighted sled, ice screw.

I don't see the need for ratcheting straps unless you don't like tying knots. you don't need that much pressure and I haven't needed to stake out all four sides. Not sure why you need to that if you have the corners screwed in.

I have the 6x12 Clam Command Post. The interior tabs used to tie down this shelter are useless. I installed brass grommets to the bottom storm flap and drill the ice inchors through this hole. If you need added support for the windward side, see the posts above.

I use Ice Angels and some rope ratchets that you can pick up at Menards. Google "rope ratchet" and you will see what I am talking about.

Works great.

That looks like a slick system. We were thinking ratchet straps witht he ice angles so we didn't have to drill in the anchors & to speed the process up. The rope ratchet looks like it would be better since you wouldn't have to ratchet it. just pull the rope until tight.

Yeah, kinda learned that first time out too. I wonder why they wouldn't have put brass frommets around teh bottom storm flaps to start with. Would only have made sense vs askint a sewed on thread strap to hole the bottom down.

That's weird...

My eskimo qf6 has tabs with brass grommets on the inside. They work really well, I only need to tie down a side on really windy days.

I'm glad my qf6 doesn't suffer from all the problems people are having with the clams or the new eskimos.

I use the screw in ice anchors and use bungie cords to attach from the hub to the anchor. It's handy, especially when I'm using a sled or the wheeler - I can use the bungies for both tie downs on the way out and anchoring while I'm there.

if its super windy I drill the holes for fishing then a half hole set up the house tie off to the auger in the half hole pull all the flaps inside and use the snow from holes to pack on the flaps... with the snow packed all around I take the tension off the auger I haven't had an issue doing it this way yet even with the 25-35mph winds

just remember to pull the flaps off the ice before tearing the house down when its really cold out likes to freeze a bit but works great way easier than the ice anchors pita

I use a tie-down strap(non-ratcheting type) for the sidewalls. I can get double duty out of them for strapping the hub down to the wheeler. Stake down two upwind corners and then one stake for that sidewall. Pop the top, then the upwind side while attaching the strap. Then pop out the other 3 sides.

Mine is the Eskimo 949i. I've been using it all season. NO problems.
