Light Contour Barrel

Recommended Posts

Is it bad to put a light contour barrel on a regular barreled gun? I mean it fits and everything but is it bad for either? I am dealing with Remington 870 Wingmasters.

What do yo mean by light contuor barrel?

I found this out about LCB

The "Heavy Contour" barrels originated when Remington first introduced their interchangeable choke tube, the "Remchoke"...they thickened the barrel walls on all their shotguns to accomodate the threads at the muzzle end of the barrel...remember, we are NOT talking about a "thin-wall" choke tube here...at any rate, apparently a LOT of people were unhappy with the weight and balance of the new, "Heavy Contour" barrels--my terminology--hence, the coming of the "Light Contour" barrels a few years later...FWIW, I spoke to the SE regional Remington Rep at a Skeet tournament not long after the intro of the "Remchoke", and told him that they had RUINED the balance of their repeaters...he said at the time the the weight difference was "Insignificant"...I asked did he know how much it was...he opined that it was ONLY an ounce or two...more like six or eight ounces or a little more, in my experience!!! Apparently, the powers-that-be at Big Green did NOT do their market research on this one, 'cause the "Heavy Contour" barrels were--and are--HUGELY UNPOPULAR with the clay target crowd.

BTW, while the original, pre-Remchoke barrels, the "Heavy Contour" Remchoked barrels and the "Light Contour" barrels SHOULD all interchange on any same-gauge/frame version of the 870, the same is NOT true for the 1100 and 11-87...some forend "swapping" or minor modification MAY BE needed IF you change to a different-contour barrel on one of the autos...
