Box Calls

I'm new to turkey hunting. I tried the mouth calls and well to say the least I sound like a very sick turkey. I would like to try a box call, but after getting a magazine in the mail the other day and seeing all the different ones I'm not sure on what one to get. I like the Keep it simple stupid method(KISS). Any and all information would be great and thank you in advance.

grin I get a kick out these rookie questions. Nothing personal, trust me. Ya just don't get it. One of ANYTHING in turkey hunting is not enough. You need to try different mouth calls, and PRACTICE with them for a LONG time to feel comfortable with them. One or two out of dozens may end up in your vest.

Same with box calls. (and all other calls for that matter) Ya gotta have at least two, three of four will be better. cool

All kidding aside, if you have to have one box call, it's going to be hard to beat the time tested Lynch's World Champion Box Call. It was one of the first mass produced calls and is still using the same design/wood today as they did 30 years ago. You'll probably get 20 different opinions on the best call, but this one will be hard to argue with.

Then their's the slate calls.....maybe in a different post huh? laugh

For new hunters I generally recommend a good boxcall like the lynch or slate call and pick up a striker variety pack. Get good at using these. Turkey calling isn't too hard and it's all about the cadence and volume. Don't worry about what it sounds like too much. Worst sounding turkey call I have ever heard came from a real live wild hen turkey. Hardest part is deciding when to call and when to shut up. Even seasoned turkey hunters struggle with this some.

The mouth call is a good one to add once you get these others down to some extent. It's hard to get comfortable with it but it's nice not having the movement and being able to throw your calls in different direction to move birds. To be honest I'm not a great caller but I still kill plenty of turkeys.

Best box call I can recommend and one of the best out there. Little heartbreaker by Primo's. I have many notches this call and never go into the woods without it. My # once call to have in my vest. I do have a second one but that never even gets pulled of the vest. Slate calls, tube calls. try a few till find what works for you. Have a few with and the turkey's will let you know what the like.

Pleny of MN birds are killed by patterning them and having them walk on by.

Hardest thing for me is just leaving that call in the pack or vest for more than 15 minutes. Sure I have called in and killed a few in hot, but how many I have turned before they became visible is hard to say.

Last year I never touched my call on the morning I killed by gobbler. He flew down from the roost and tried to land in my lap even though flying the other way would have put him on the ground with a pair of hens. Go figure.

I use a mouth call and slate call but recently i went down to Cabelas and bought a box call by HS Strut called "Closer" for $20 its my first box call I've bought and to be honest I think its a decent call, easy to use and sounds pretty good and a bonus is its not expensive if you don't like it.
