Electronics - New Forum List Topic

In an ideal world, it would be nice to have a forum topic set aside just for electronics talking. I have been on this site for five years, and it always seems to be the same arguments about Vexilars, Marcums, Humminbirds and everything else.

It gets a little old that any time any memeber asks a question about their unit everyone chimes in with their 2c about how they should switch to a different brand for this reason and that.

The truth is that many of us are happy with the units that we use. We are used to them, we know how to read them, and we are not interested in switching. The bashing of different companies is getting old.

I personally have opinions on two of the major brands and favor one over the other. The only reason I have two opinions is that I have been the owner of both of these brands. When I post about the unit that I was not impressed with I try to do so in a factual manner so that people can make informed decisions and buy the unit that is right for them. Have I made a few posts getting caught up in "the talk", maybe, but I never speak of what I am not sure from my own experience.

You have to think of it in the mind of the "new poster" It'll always be a hot topic, which flasher is better. They are excited about an upcoming purchase or a recent purchase and they want to voice their opinion on it because they didn't get in on the last thread smile

I was a Vex FL8 owner forever, now I have a Humminbird Ice 45 and I'm in love with it smile

Thats what I am saying. Although I may not use the same unit that you do, or even from the same company that you do, I am glad you are happy with it!

If the site could open a brand new topic titled "electronics", all of their questions could be answered in that section without all of us having to read it over and over. Perhaps even a thread that is permanent at the top of the list titled Ice Fishing Electronics. Then any who would be interested could just grab a coffee and start reading throught the thousands and thousands of pages of info.

The beauty of these forums is you can read or not read anything you want to, so no need to get too worked up having to scroll past the same old re-hashed threads.

It'd be hard to enforce posting electronic specific posts only to any one forum anyhow. Most boat related electronics posts go into the Equipment forum, which makes sense. When ice rolls around the Ice Fishing echo chamber will likely always comes into play. Ice fishing makes folks crazy. crazy

With the current popularity of ice fishing, and the fact that alot of them are just getting into it, means that there is a "Greenhorn" mentality to alot of the electronics questions initially. If you think about it, they are just researching their purchases ahead of time, and don't want to make a $500 mistake. I don't blame them. If anything, HSO might want to push the search feature a bit more to help guide them into already hashed-over discussions. Alot of google searches for these terms tend to bring people here, which is good, and benefits us all IMHO. But, that brings in new members with an energized attitude to discuss this that has worn away from most of us.

Out of the 2,645,000+ posts, here is the breakdown as to where most of them go:

Ice Fishing:237k posts

Equipment and Expert Info: 125k posts

Metro Region: 113k posts

Outdoor Discussions: 111k posts

Canada Regional: 103k posts

BWCA Region:101k posts

Open Water: 96k posts

...and a few at 60k posts and down from there. I could see some value to splitting Ice fishing into a couple of sub-forums (General Discussion and Tehniques, House Building and Sled Modding, and All Gear), but I'd hate to have to do all of the work to organize and move them!!! I'm happy just the way it is, and will help out when I can.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Move some of the more recent ones, and even if they lost some past threads by deleting the history, it could be a lot more user friendly in the future.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
