Slick jig micro problems

Recommended Posts

I just got back from trout opener on Cenaiko. Success! 3 rainbows iced, though I shoulda had 5, lost one due to a phone call while the fish hit, and lost another..

because it destroyed my slick jig micro.

I bought a two-pack of slick jig micros the other day and figured they'd be great. Sure enough the action is awesome. Tipped with a waxworm, it was the only thing I caught fish on today.

My first jig had its hook bent on the first fish I caught. On the second fish I caught on it, the hook straightened completely while unhooking.

My second slick jig caught me a fish, and again the hook was bent even before trying to unhook. I was careful during the unhooking and got it out without further damage. I re-formed the hook to a proper hook shape.

The next fish to hit broke the jig in half and 3/4 of the painted lead crumbled off the hook shank as well.

Are these jigs just so delicate that they're only good for one or two fish? I can't imagine that they'd suffer much less damage even just on crappies or 'gills, I didn't catch any monsters or even any over 16''.

How do the non-micro slick jigs compare? Anyone else had issues with the micros? I just can't believe how soft, pliable, and damageable the wire is.. I'm just frustrated because I like these too much to not use them laugh

I caught 100+ bluegill(15 8-9"ers), 10" crappie, and a couple 2lb bass one day on a single Slick Jig Micro back in December and really the only damage to it was 90% of the paint was gone. Yeah the hooks are very delicate but was able to bend them back in shape if they got bent, but I never lost a fish because of it bending out. Most of the bending was due to hook removal and not the fish fighting. I was using 2lb Flouro.

What size and type line are you using? If it's too big I'd imagine it would straighten the hook fairly easily.

I love those Micro Slick jigs with the new Northland Impulse minnow. An absolutely fantastic combination!

I would venture to guess it is more of a problem of your equipment over powering the jig if you are bending them on fighting or hooksets, they are micro and touted as that, if you weren't using ultra ultralight equipment which is what they were meant for, if you were using ultra light equipment then the jig is at fault(I am just taking a guess and not trying to rip on either the poster or the product)

Main, I was up on Echo for opener today and had my success with a micro slick jig tipped with waxie as well. Put 9 fish on the ice with no problems. Largest was 15". I was using an Al Dente noodle rod. River Rat may be on to something with too much force being put on the jig.

main, what size were you using?ive seen them as small as 1/48 oz. real small, probably to small for trout, there are bigger ones, maybe 1/32 oz, maybe bigger in the micro jigs, dont know for sure how big they go for micro, 1/16 maybe, the regular slick jigs are plenty strong and the paint has held up well for me so far,

I have to agree with others, make sure your equipement isn't over powering the slick jig. I brought in a 28" Northern a couple weeks ago on a slick jig micro with a Little Weggie tail. The lure was completely undamaged, but it was tied to a light action rod with light line.

just to answer Qs, light action, 4lb test

I'll be giving them another shot for sure, with the drag set super light, and barbs pinched down for easier removal and see if I repeat my issues. Sure loved the action, and since it was the only jig that caught for me, I really appreciate how it succeeded in icing fish.

Main, I would say take the advice from above and contact Lindy. Maybee you just got a few bad jigs from a batch. I do agree that they have a nice action and as of yet I have had no trouble with any of the micros I have.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
