Release Tools

What kind of release tools do you keep in your boat?

I have a net ( not every fish sees it )
Long needle nose pliers
long side cutters
mini bolt cutters
mouth spreader

What other tools are out there that will aid in releasing these big toothy fish.

I have all that you have. My thought is to get a floating measuring stick and measure the fish in the lake rather than in the boat, the floor is carpeted. Seen one for $18, a little too pricey, probably will make my own, I got word from the "boss" that I spent enough already on this hobby.

See you on the lake,
Rob

Hi Guys,
All of the above except the net, I use a craddle when necessary. smile.gif

I also have tailing gloves, they work
great when you have a partner that can
remove the hooks, while you support the fish.
They also come in handy when you hook a
fish under the chin. It allows you to keep your hands clear of those hooks.

Guideman, what exactly is a tailing glove and where are they sold?

Also, how did the meeting go? I hope to make it there one of these times.

Tailing gloves can be found at JockO.com

LOL

I seen them on all over, many different types.
They are a good tool.
Seen some, used one a few times, but don't own one.
Wet hands will not harm the slim, but the fish can split on ya, dry hands are a no, no!
Nothing like catching a Big Pike or Musky and seeing a hand print on the rear or around the shoulders from when it was grabbed with DRY hands.
We have a photo of a Pike I caught in Daisy Bay that had a complete hand print on it.
Sad to see. Fish was for the most part healthy, but is looked silly and may not live as long as it should.

I use one thing not many freash water people do.
I have a 10 inch file handle with a homemade 14 inch tempered steel loop / hook on the end.
Nice to slip into the gap of the hook, give a sharp snap and BINGO, hook is free in quick second!

Quick an easy.
Saves the fish from harm, and keeps the hooks on the bait, NOT in your hands.
Good when fishing alone or any time you want to water release these beautys.

See ya!

T.

Take a 4-6 foot piece of rope and tie mouth spreader, hook out, and bolt cutters together. Keeps tools from going in the lake. (I unhook all muskies in the water.) Plus you aren't scrambling around the boat looking for tools.

Hi Rob,
The meeting went well, we added two new
members and we are planning an outting
for June 9th.

We picked a sunday so the guys that own resorts can get away, saturdays are way
to busy for them.

The outting will be at my place or up at Vermilion Dam Lodge. We are still in the planning stage but we should have the info soon.

The gloves that I use are plain white
cotton, they are soft and allow a good grip, without damaging the fish.

Hey Tom

Didn't know M J was a muskie nut, come to think of it, I think I saw him at B Bops during the swap doing the moon walk on the bar grin.gif

Sounds like a neat tool to have in the boat I might have to whip one up in the garage tomorrow, I think your describing something that is shaped like a (J) right, if not think you could send me a blue print.LOL

I'm always intrested in trying new things.

I've heard alot about the Boga Grip but never saw one anybody ever try one of these.

Hi JKrash.

Your right on!
I bent it to look like an almost closed J.
Kind of like a Big Circle Hook.
Fits over a Free Treble, but better yet it fits right around the whole Treble hook shaft.
With one quick snap, the hooks pop free and you can let the fish ride in the net for a moment to snap a photo or just let her go!
smile.gif
Easy to make and I'm sure you know it is a cool feeling using something you made in the garage on your own.
smile.gif
Also gives you something to do while we wait, and wait and wait for the ice to split!
smile.gif
Never used a Boga Grip.
Looks cool, but a BIG fish doing a dance on the end of that might snap yer wrist!

***
Ace and all you other Arrowhead Muskie Inc. Brothers!
I hope you would count me in on your get together June 9th if ya would?
I could do my part by donating a few dozen Brats, Burgers and Steaks to grill up at lunch.
Buns and lots of Onions to!
Plus, I promise to ease off a bit on the total number of Musky I boat, just to keep it fun for the rest of ya!

Man did we get nailed here with the snow.
Way cool.
Dogs love it.
Makes me feel like a little kid chasing the hounds around the yard in it.
Barney, Bailey, Homer and Bonnie buried me but good in the many snow banks I created last night behind the garage.
LOL

Work had to wait until 9 am this fine day.

Life is good.

Sunday sounds great, I can take Monday off of work and make another long weekend!

I can almost smell Tom's smoky grill right now! With your dogs around, any plate left unattended is fair game!

Tom
Thanks for the info,
I,m going to try one this year.

I did a search on the net for the Boga and WOW are the expensive, I kind of like the scale option but I think it would probably end up in the drink or worse yet a thieving ski would take off with it.
