Lake Map Books - Printed Maps?

Hey Folks,

I had the previous version of the Navonics app for Android and somewhere along the line lost the data - so now I would need to re-purchase and download the maps again.

Before I do that, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any places where I can order printed lake maps?

I'm looking for mostly maps around the southern/south central parts of Minnesota but do take trips up north quite a bit in the winter. Is there a statewide book of lake maps?

I'd like to have the book rather than an app for when I'm at home scouting, trying to determine the next lake to try, or plotting the next outing on my favorite lake.

Any information that you all can give me into where to look (who has the best printed maps?) and how to get a collection, that'd be great. I'd like to try and get a book rather than buy each map individually so that I can use it more of a scouting tool (finding new lakes, etc...)

Thanks,

Bryon

The chain sporting goods stores will have books of maps. Also, the MN DNR Lakefinder site has maps that can be downloaded along with survey data that is helpful. Last, Lakemaster has/had a PC program that is very handy for planning and you can print maps at any zoom you wish if you can figure out how to do it wink

I've found that the DNR lakefinder site (or app) doesn't have some of the maps that I'd like to have. But I have found a couple of those missing lakes in books online, just was looking for everyone's go to map book or to see if there was a common one that I just didn't know about.

If you had the lakes north version of the navionics app you should have access to it in the market again. you should not need to repurchase it. if you wish to purchase one then purchase the upgraded version thats out. It is worth the money.

tell me more about the navionics app- is is accurate? do you need to have a 3G connection for it to work?

i fish a lot of smaller lakes in N. MN, and not so much the big popular lakes, AND many times don't have 3G coverage. so before i purchased this, i would like to have an idea of what kind of lakes are covered and if it will run without the data connection.

thanks!

Once you have the maps downloaded you do not need data coverage, only gps signal to use the app. The app, for the money, is an absolute must have for anybody who owns a smart phone but does not have a handheld gps...I have a handheld gps too but usually just use the navionics app because it is so convenient.

I went with the US one because I have no plans of fishing Canada in the near future. The catch with Navionics seems that every couple of years they come out with a new app and stop supporting the old one so go into it knowing you may need to shell out another $10 in a year or two. If you know you won't be fishing Canada in the next couple years than I'd save my $6...on the other hand, it's only $6. grin

Should a guy go with the us one or the us and Canada one for the extra six bucks??

With the sheer volume of added content it well worth the 6 bucks plus if you fish lake of the woods youll have all the canada info for a complete map of the lake.

I fished with a guy last year that had the Navionics app installed. Granular contour maps varied by lake, some had 5 ft, others had 1 ft. coutours, but the maps were of decent quality, if I recall correctly. They were not the crappy DNR maps we've all seen. We were fishing a new lake, did some pre-scouting, and were able to drive right out to the spot we were looking for, a small hump. Parked right over the top of it. My phone isn't supported yet, but this is one application that I've had starred once I get my new phone.

I just downloaded the USA map and it looks like very nice maps. The few lakes I looked at we're all five foot contours but I know there are lakes with one foot contours. Seems like a great ten dollar investment to me! I just downloaded the upper mn map for now only took a few min with the works wifi connection seems like it might drian the battery a bit but I well!

Tsande do you know if his uses your data??

I'm no expert but I would imagine that if you download the map files over wifi that it would not use any data. Also - because the app works with no cell service I don't see how it can possibly use up any data from your plan...unless you are downloading the map files over 3G/4G.

    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
    • Yeah we fished like 6 or 7 lakes down here.
