Rod Building >> Rod Tip Tops

All fishing rod tip tops have 2 important dimensions, the tube size and the ring size. The tube size is the inside diameter of the tube that accepts your rod blanks. Tube sizes are measured in 64ths of an inch. A tube size of 5.0 equals 5/64 of an inch inside diameter.

The ring size of a tip tp refers to the size of the ring that your fishing line passes through. For most freshwater fishing rods, a size 8 ring is common. It is common on saltwater fishing rods for ring sizes to increase as tube sizes increases.

Kind of off topic but I had a quick question for the Guide tip. When I took Gary's Class He just used a rubber glue (looked like a hot glue stick) to glue the tip to the top of the blank...Is it normal to use a glue like that? I feel like it might not be strong enough to keep it in place and it was hard to get the glue all the way in the guide.

Is there a type of epoxy you use for this? or is that the typical way to do it?

Don't use an epoxy! ( you may have to replace that tip again some day!)A glue stick can work, but i prefer to use a hot melt stick( archery supply stuff) Heat the stick, smear some on the rod tip. Lightly heat the guide, and slide it on the rod. Line it up and let cool. Then if you ever need to replace it, you can just heat the guide and pull it off. smile

I have a 25 yr old fly rod that I used ferrel glue one(a hot glue) and it is still working fine. I have heard of people using epoxy, but if you treat your rods so poorly that a high quality hot glue won't hold up the rest of the rod will go first. There is really no stress or strain on the tip top.

Hot glue works great. There are different grades of hot glue. The stuff you normally would use will work, but CAN come loose easily specifically if your rods ever in a car or in the direct sun light. I have had them melt in the heat of my car.

I use a yellow colored glue stick which has a higher melting point. This can be in my car all day long in direct sun and not melt.

Jon,

that glue stick was formulated specifically for rod tips. I have two at home from when I replaced some broken tips on some of my brother in laws rods. on a side not and not meaning to high jack the thread please email me and I have some stuff to share with you. I tried to PM you but your box was full. lets just say I took the jump and now Gary has my entire christmas bonus check and I will end up with a total of 5 custom rods when I get them all built, will share the details when you email.
