Vx-1, Fl8, or Humminbird Ice-35

Looking at maybe purchasing one of the base units for an entry level flasher. What does everyone have and in our opinion what do you like about each? it'd be especially helpful if you've used or owned both at one time or another.

I have all 3 units and used all 3 units.

Without getting into the Ford-Chevy debate, they will all work fine for you. I know with the older FL8's, I had to use an extra cable, forget the name of the cable so one could use it in shallow water but that could have changed sinced I purchased mine.

If I had to pick one, I would take the Ice 35.

I'd go with the 18 and a TriBeam ducer (8,12 & 20 Degree). If you can, bump up to the FL-20 for a flat screen.

Just curious why you guys would go with the HB? It has two cone angles (60 and 20), 2 1/2 inch target seperation, etc. It's no upgrade IMO.

He is looking at FL8, not FL18. So you have to take into account that VX-1 and Ice 35 have zoom option and between those two the bird has dual cone.

went through the same internal debate last year. i went with the ice35 because it does offer more options for that price class.

First off I would throw out the fl-8 because the vx-1 and ice 35 have way more features on them like a zoom.

Like Harvey Lee said, they all work. I would just look at the features and looks of the unit and get what you want. I picked the ice 35 and love it, my father-in-law has the fl8 and it does everything he needs. When I get another one I will be getting a marcum just so I can have 2 different flashers.

All Vexilars, HB and the VX-1 are all about 2.5" seperation, I agree though toss out the 8 and got with one of the other 2. VX-1 gets my vote and to get a Vex with similar featues you'll have to spend the money to get a FL-18....If a guy would got used you could luck into a LX-5 for around $300 give or take, and have the Porche of flashers....

Not to mention the fact that if you got the FL8, you'd need to plunk down some more cash to get the power suppression cable to vexilate thems shallow fish..

I went the 35 for a backup for the FL20 and I have been very happy with it. Catch just as as many fish with it and no interference with other units in the tent.

Id go with the 35. When i bought mine i compared the features to fl 18 and it had just as many for half the price!

I went from a FL8 to a Humminbird ICE35 and I could not be more happy. The dual beam transducer and the adjustable zoom put it in a higher category than the Vex in my opinion. Plus the larger screen is so nice.

Target seperation is 2.5", Target ID is what Vex claimes to be .5, two different things.... Trust me I have a Vex 20 in the shack next to my LX-5 and the 20 don't come close to matching the 5....
