crappies on senkos

I haven't ever really fished for them intentionally this way, but the discussion below about upsizing reminded me. I was fishing for bass with the 5" senkos texas rigged weightless and with weight last year. Caught several 13-14" crappies that inhaled it. I was swimming it more than just letting it fall. I had a bullet weight clipped on in front and was swimming it in about 6-10' of water.

Yep, them big slabs will take bigger baits. Those are some nice fish, must have been a blast pulling in those pigs. Good post, I like to hear reports like this. I caught a few crappies on cranks in the past, when crappies are hungry, they will eat smile.gif

Anyone else have any reports about catching crappies with larger baits?

Years ago I work a back-channel in the Mississippi river backwaters near Wabasha (remember my telling you of this place Matt?) and would troll #11 and 13 rapalas on three ways thru there in the early morning for walleyes. More often than not the fish that hit were crappies! 12", 13", and 14"ers would absolutely pound these baits. Do not discount the open water craps. They will hit, and aggressively so, much larger baits than you think. I know of people fishing northerns with 4 inch sucker minnows who catch crappies on them. As Matt said, when they want to eat, they can do so in a grand way.

I got a 10 inch Crappie on a Reef Runner last year. I don't know what he was thinking hitting a 5 inch bait at 2.0 mph! Otherwise big shiners have supprised me and also tandem spinnerbaits for a suicidal crappies. If I get a Crappie casting a 10 inch suick for Muskie I am going to quit swimming in lakes altogether. smile.gifsmile.gif

My nephew caught a reeeally nice crappie on a small lake last year ice fishing. He was useing a decent size sucker. He had the fish weighed on a state scale right after he caught it.He was 1oz shy of a new state record. Not bad for a 13 yr old kid.He has it on the wall now, thing almost looks like a bass.Over 20" nose to tail. Some of you may have even ready a story on it in some of the local outdoor mags & papers. He was fishing just north of Harris.I didn't think he was going to get it through the 8" hole, but he did !I now fish with VERY LARGE fatheads.

I love reading such stories! Gives me some great ideas. Were these caught from a boat or from shore? I'll hafta see what I can do with my miriad of small cranks and medium sides plastics.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
