Homemade Rattle reels

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any good ideas for a homemade rattle reel? I have a plan to use a spent rattle spray paint can (sm. touch up can). Drilled a hole through it and put a metal coat hanger through it to make the can spin. The can already has a rattle built in and will be taped to a chair, bucket ect.

Just looking for something cheap as I am heading up to Mille Lacs first weekend or Jan. and the rental house doenst come with Rattle reels.

Any forseeable issues with my idea would be appreciated. Ill post pic when I complete it.

I have also gone the route of the old line spool filled with a few BB's and it worked OK. Another idea is just to use a tip-up over one of the holes in the corner holes. The flag will make plenty of noise to wake you (if you behave yourself in the evening). Making your own rattle reel can be fun but you can buy one for less than $5.00 at F.F.

Drink a beer, twist off the pop top and drop it in the empty, wrap your line around the can about 10 wraps set it 2 feet from the hole and done. I like to empty several more just in case. whistle

I think we have a winner!

Multiple pop tops in the same can would make more noise so I think a guy would need at least 6 tops to make enough noise.

There are some really cheap ones out there, so it might not be as expensive to buy one or two as you might think. But I know guys who rig them up on old aluminum cans or on old spools of line.

You could also use a rod holder and turn the drag really, really loose on the reel. Just tighten up the drag before you set the hook. smile
