I use the Norwegian ice thickness test:

If 1 friend goes out and falls through, path is not safe; send someone else

If 2 friends goes out and fall through Path is not safe send someone else

If 3 friends goes out and they don't fall through, ice is good.

On the bottom of the ice chart there is a disclaimer that mentions "fish schools". Will a school of fish really effect the ability for ice to form? Is so I want to find that kind of fish school they seem like an active bunch.

I heard about a truck going thru a few years ago on a path that same truck had driven many times earlier in the year and they couldn't figure out what happened until they looked closer at the truck and they found tulibees around the engine that got trapped when the truck fell thru...like said earlier, not much you can do about that.

another thing that will cause thin ice is methane gas coming off the bottom of the lake. a good example of this is Horseshoe lake on the sauk river chain. the is a methane spot in the lake and that is how this area has become known as the meth hole. so if you hear some one talking about the meth hole and the chain this is what they are talking about. last year this area had a skim ice over it and if you didn't know the area where it was you would have went in.
