We have been trapping this area since 1936 and we had to laugh as this year has been odd. I got the double the in the 220, a grouse in a otter set and even managed to get a blanket beaver in a #1 long spring set for rats. Been a crazy year.

Caught a otter one year 300+ yards from any water on a coon trail with a 220. That was pretty weird. Good looking rats by the way.

Nope thats a 220. I use 220's as I have lots of otters and beavers mixed in the area. So all the run sets get a 220. And yes those are big rats. The area I went into had not been trapped in fifteen years so there was some dandies and lots of them.

Just curious. What is a rat worth these days ? I trapped in high school in the mid 70s in PA. Back then we were getting $4.50 whole. Red fox were $ 80 ! Most rats we ever got in one night was 36.

Well I sell in the round with zero skinning, some regions pay better or guys that skin and send to auction can do better if they want to deal with it. For me Rats are $5/4/1. Five for tops, 4 for seconds and a buck for kits or damaged/bitten. Fox are running 12-25, dogs about 20, beaver are hard to move at 15-20. Mink are a shame around $9-$12, Otter and Fisher/Marten might get $40. I remember good prime mink at $40, Fisher well over $300 and Cats hitting $500 for a pale one. Heck coon where $3 then now a early stringy coon at $14 is worth more then a prime mink.

Terrible for the rest. Glad to see rats still up. Man do I have good memories of trapping. We never did catch a red fox. Bought a fox paw even from Stanley Hawbakers ( trapping supply place) sifted the dirt over traps. Hole set with bait and urine.Used the paw to make prints in the sifted dirt. Mornings we would find them flipped over without going off and [PoorWordUsage] and crapped on !!! Sneaky suckers !!

LOL Ya fox are smart no doubt about it. Mink also, between fox and mink trapping you will learn a lot before the stretching boards fill up. Rats are just suicidal, I'm sure of it.

I have had a good fox year so far. Otter are giving me a run. I caught all but one tag in two days and the last one is making me earn it. It has become a war between me and Otter number four. Last night he decided to play slide between the traps, six inches either way he was toast. He even stopped and put his paws on the top of the 220 and turnded around in the snow.
