MuleShack
I pre ordered it from their HSOforum and they gave a 11/14 ship date. Now the tracking is saying it will be delivered Monday. $400 plus shipping. I bought a battery back pack for my original hero so I can use it on the new one. Will probably keep my original and use it for other perspectives in the field or with another person along to get different kinds of shots. what comes with it? Assuming the same that came with my original...a head band mount, and a few other mounts and the wifi remote.
PierBridge
The H3 looks pretty sweet to me, I love smaller.... might have to take hit on the H2 and upgrade... Mule are the low light H3 videos, REALLY a lot better?
MuleShack
Truthfully, I have only used it once so far and that was filming the last segment of my video last week Wednesday. The video seemed a little clearer, but I also had the "protune" on and the white balance to auto. The video seemed a little "yellowish" compared to other cuts. I was going to experiment with different film settings today combined with focal ranges (narrow, medium and wide). From what it sounds like the 4k and 2.7k settings are really good video which you can pull 8mp still photos out of. The problem is it is suppose to be a tripod shot. 1440p is recommended for body mounted shots as larger viewing area and high frame rate yield smoothest results. I have only tried 1080p on medium FOV so far. Will let you know on some of these other settings later. As far as low light, it says it has a good sensor and the video I saw on FB from the GP FB page shows a person setting the camera on a trolly track at night and it light up the city street lights and the train as it was coming. It showed the persons face when they picked it up. There are a few videos out there if you google low light H3. I cant find the one with the trolley that I originally saw but here is another one. MuleShack
This picture was pulled from a video shot at 2.7k and 30fps. It was taken at right around 5:00pm tonight. You can see the geese in the sky and they were not really that close. The higher settings seem to give distance a bit better clarity. I have noticed that the higher settings also take a lot longer for my pinnacle program to render it. Also it wouldn't recognize the 2.7K video, I had to run it thru the cineform program and convert it to mp4 first and then I could bring it into Pinnacle. It also takes up the GB faster on the high settings. 15 minutes of video was about 5GB tonight using the 4k, 2.7k and the 1440 settings. MuleShack
Here is my experiment with low light last night.Took camera along to the dog park.Sunset is at 4:35pmThis video was shot from 4:52 to 4:55pmNot to bad in my opinion. In other video shot later at 5:15 (not on here) it was still viewable but grainy
Scott M
Saw a Hero 2 Outdoor Edition at Sam's Club for $199.99. Includes a WiFi BacPac and GoPro App for your smartphone. Waterproof to 179 feet. That's not a bad price for next version down. Thoughts? I'm thinking if there is any money after the holidays, I might pull the trigger. LMITOUT
That sounds like a pretty darn good deal, especially if the wi-fi bacpac is included. I've never seen one packaged with the wi-fi before. Usually it has the head mount and some various connectors/mounts but no accessories such as the wi-fi.As I mentioned earlier, if weight and size isn't an issue I don't think I'd have a problem getting the Hero2. The price is right and it's hard to pass that up.Depending on your needs you might want to just look at the Hero3 White edition. Same price, wi-fi built in, but doesn't include the headmount. vman11
I need one of these!
Scott M
Okay, pulled the trigger yesterday on the Hero2 with WiFi battery backpac. It was the right price. Audio was tough, I used default settings. Does the plastic housing impede sound pickup? I didn't get the best audio. Also, recommendations on video editing software? Windows Movie Maker is sitting on 15 minutes of loading and the end is nowhere in sight.I'm working on a mount to the top of my portable fish house. Should make for good videos to close out the year on ice. I added the GoPro app to my phone but the directions in the user manual directed me to a missing page at GoPro's HSOforum. I hope I can get this working as I'd like to use this to shoot video in the fish house. If anyone wants to take a stab at any of these questions, feel free. I'll do some more reading in the meantime. PierBridge
Audio is not great when using the waterproof enclosure but it does improve with the vented version.Movie-Maker does take some time to buffer the video's other programs mentioned earlier in this thread can preform better as they allow you to start editing before the entire video has loaded... Also your Computer/Laptop strength will factor into this too.
Jim Almquist
You might add what type of phone you are loading the software on to. The other thing could be a software update is needed on the camera to work with the phone.
Scott M
Thanks guys. I've hardly done much reading, save for scanning through the manual, so I need to put forth more of an effort to get these things going. Loading to a Droid Incredible phone. LMITOUT
Make sure the camera and bakpak have been updated to the latest and greatest firmware. Load up the Cineform software from GoPro and it will check automatically and walk you through it.Check out the bike mount from GoPro for a way to mount to tube frames such as in a fish house, unless you have a hub style? Scott M
Got the app to work and the firmware added. Very BA setup, if things go as planned you will like the mount I'm making for the fish house. I actually like the wide angle in there as it makes the small space seem much bigger:
LMITOUT
You should have gotten a rear door that has holes in in. Obviously the unit isn't waterproof with that installed, but it should help your audio.
LMITOUT
Here is a simple mount I put together that will clamp on anywhere. The tripod mounting adapter makes it super simple to mount these things anywhere, as then you can use a standard 1/4-20 bolt (same size/threads as typical tripods) attached to anything and then just screw the mount to it. In this case, your standard hardware store clamp:
Scott M
Good call on the welding clamp. I found the extra skeleton door, good tutorial follows:
Scott M
Here's a mount that works well in the fish house...I used the mount that comes on the box when you buy the unit rather than throwing it away with the box.
Scott M
I gotta re-read this thread for time lapse and ideal resolutions and speed for certain outdoor situations. I got a nasty horizon bubble from shooting too wide while snow goose hunting. I got in a hurry and wore the camera on my head. Would have been smarter to set it up behind all of our blinds like most others do.
PierBridge
I use my Kodak Playsport behind the blind as that camera has zoom. The GoPro which doesn't have Zoom I usually wear or have set up closer to the deke's.
grapeapplepie
Hey GoPro users,So I have an iPhone and the Hero3. Does anyone know what sort of range for the WiFi I can expect? I'm looking to film some hunts this fall and was wondering how far away I can setup my camera from my hunting position.
MuleShack
Not sure. I have the Galaxy II and only played with the wifi in my office so far.Give it a try and let us know what you find out.
PierBridge
I would think at least a football field or better being out in the open like that!
mhines
Anyone ever used one of these for home videos?? I know they are more used for sporting type events, but I am wondering how it would work as a normal camcorder.
PierBridge
Not a big fan of the GoPro as regular Camcorder. No zoom and somewhat difficult navigation as far as controlling the Camera. It's more of a mounting or fixed close range video tool IMO.
