2005 Tahoe Spare tire.

Recommended Posts

I had a tire leaking a bit out hunting and tried to crank down my spare(mounted underneath). I couldn't get it down to change the tire. Just kept putting air in it and had a plug put in.The mechanic in the little town in Sask.wasn't sure about the problem. Any advice??? DrJ.

Probably corroded. It's always a good idea to lubricate the mechanism with WD40 now and then. I usually spray it every spring and fall by lowering the tire and spraying it liberally to flush out the junk that may accumulate and lubricate.

If you can reach the guide hole the wrench goes into spray it well and let it sit, may need to repeat it a couple times over several days to get it to loosen up.

Work it up and down. The safety latch that prevents the tire from falling down should the cable fail is not releasing. After lubricating lossen the cable a couple turns and then tighten. Keep repeating until it drops.

Option two is to by a new spare tire carrier assembly.
