Moving companys

Some of you know I'll be moving to Texas soon. Need any recommendations regarding moving companys or services. We've done some research and have found some of the places don't really tell you up front online the total cost of a move. We've seen places where you pack it and they drive it down. We are also contemplating renting a truck and doing it ourselves. One report we read a guy thought price was about $1,900, but when he was packed and ready to go he found out the cost was nearly $5,000. I think we can get all our stuff in a 20-24' truck plus a car dolly. Anyone use PODS?

I had a full relocation through an employer 3 years ago, they hired United Van Lines to fully pack and to move me 200 miles. After everything was said and done the bill was about $6000. They were great and the time they stated they would be there was exact, and everyone was very professional.

That said, if you can rent a U-haul (or whoever) and do it yourself you will save a ton. Only problem I see is, will you know anyone else when you get down there to help you unpack? I do believe U-haul has a service that will help unload if you need it, but it probably isn't cheap.

Several "pod" type companies have websites that you can pick the size unit, mileage, etc and it will come up with a price quote. Some offer packing/unpacking services. Some of the major carriers will let you use as much as a trailer as needed, put a divider up and fill the balance with freight down to the area you move. I got some quotes last year to move my parents to Florida from them. They came back one or twice and offered me discounts off the original price, so, don't take the first quote.

A friend of mine moved a couple of years ago and used one of the pod companies. It was a local Duluth area trucking company. She moved to Baltimore. She was very satisfied with their delivery and it was very reasonably priced compared to full-service movers which were out-of-sight in pricing . Some of the things she told me was the trucking firm took no responsibility for the condition of the goods delivered so pack well. She also greatly underestimated the time it takes to pack up a household and the amount of boxes and packing materials needed. Another problem she had was to have a crew at the destination to unload the pod. She solved that by contacting a local temp service. Just some info I thought I'd pass along.
