One man shacks!!

I have a quick question. I'm looking at a one man shack and was wondering if anyone has the clam kenai I just want something light, and to keep me out of the elements. I have the otter lodge but it's just alot of weight to lug around by myself and I usually fish alone except when my kids want to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

A friend has the Kenai and likes it. I have the Scout and I would spend the extra $30 or $40 for the scout due to better seating. I load my rods, baits, ice scoop, tip ups, flasher, buddy heater and other gear into the sled and can lift the Scout and put in the the back of my truck. Really easy to pull with the light weight. It does allow me to get on some lakes that do not have roads to access. I've used in in temps down to -20 and have no problem staying warm with the small buddy heater. Most of the time I don't use a heater.

I have the older, doorless Kenai and like it a lot. I bought a boat seat and put it in there to replace the bench, along with lights and reflectix. I also use a RAM rail mount for the flasher so it doesn't take up any floor space. I run a buddy heater and it's almost too warm. A nice, light setup that takes 2 minutes to knock down and load into the pickup.full-21464-13507-img00087_20110107_1644.

It's good to see a picture I haven't looked at them yet but I see there is some room in there, I know it will be tight. What is the bench like, or is a seat better? Thanks for your info it's just nice to see what people think they don't have reviews on them yet. Ripinlip I met you on your favorite lake a couple years ago with my neighbor Frank we call you when we need some info on ice conditions and the bite over there thanks for showing us your hot spot too hope we can meet up again this year.

I bought a Kenai this spring at the end of the season. My old Pro was getting worn out and I got a steal of a deal on the Kenai.

I haven't hit the ice with it yet, after that I might decide to do some mods. Its so light I'm not sure if I want to add any weight.....

I bought a new mini buddy heater that will work great in it.

I think you would enjoy its size verses its weight.

Can't wait to get it out!

I also have the older doorless Kenai. I didn't care much for the original bench/seat that came installed. I went out and purchased one of the old Clam Pro/Yukon/Voyager Grey Padded seats and installed that. Other than the seat, I have nothing to complain about with the Kenai. I'd recommend putting the hyfax on as well to prevent wear and tear on the tub, if you do end up purchasing this portable.

Good Luck,

Chris

I bought a Kenia last year and love it! Yea the bench seat isn't the most comfortable but I take a regular square boat cushion and put it on top of the clam seat and its very comfortable. The extra heigth that the extra cushion gives is great. The sled is a little deeper and longer that the scoout but that allows me to make sure everything is stored secuely inside the tub when walking a distance.

I have checked out the otters and I do have a small otter sled but I just can't swing that much money now. I bought a pack shack last year but that just doesn't cut it so I thought that this little clam would suit my needs alittle better. I would like to stay about the $200 range. It's nice to here the input though. Thanks

I went on Greg's list and got a Fish Trap Pro w/ hyfax, cover, and tow bar for $200. Has a nicer fold down seat. A little bigger shack with a lot nicer seat for your price range. Plus all the extras! Just an idea if you want a little more for your money, buy used. they're all over the place

I remember meeting you, always nice to meet other fisherman.

Hoping our paths can cross again this year.

Bought a Kenai used last year for $120, fished probably 5 times out of it and was very comfortable. Bench seat isn't the best, but I just threw an extra cushion on it and was good. Heated with a very small propane heater and had to shut it off often otherwise it got too hot. Very light, pulled it by hand and had all my gear tucked inside. I bought the cover for it and I put all my fishing gear in it and throw it in the pickup by myself.

I fish out of an Otter Den, and really like the width for a 1 man shack.

Not only can you fish 2 holes a lot more comfortably, but you can get what you need in the sled without a problem.

The otter sleds can be a bit heavy for pulling, but theyre durable and I love my otter den.

You can find a couple otter dens or cabins on a-sales-site for less than that right now.

If you're looking to run and gun then the Trapper, Scout TC or Kenai work well because you don't have to extend any poles. If you're looking for a ton of room out in front of you then the Kodiak is a good choice. And if you're looking for overall comfort and versatility then the Pro TC and Jason Mitchell Thermal Pro are your go-to options.

I'm going to use the Jason Mitchell Thermal Pro this winter. Last winter I used the Pro TC and really enjoyed it, but now that there is a full thermal option I'm going to make the switch. I used a Kenai two years ago and that was an excellent house for serious hole-hopping.

No matter the situation, there are one person options out there!

I have a Frabill Recon, and have really liked the tidy and lightweight package. It's like the Predator Drone of Ice fishing. My F.I.L. is looking at one man options and we both like the roominess and build of the Frabill Pro. No sliding poles, padded high-back seat included, 4-way sliding seat position for packing and unpacking gear, and good windows and door placement. Don't get me wrong, it is a huge and heavy (and expensive) tank of a one man, but he gets almost claustrphobic in a fishhouse and likes his room..

6157_lg_1.jpg

Setup: 123"L x 40"W x 75"H

Folded: 66"L x 40"W x 18"H

Fishable Area: 57"L x 40"W (15.8 sq. ft)

Weight- 98 lbs

Thanks for the replies. Chode, is that otter deal with the poles and canvas I looked on G.M. HSOforum and saw they had the I think the cabin for $299 but it doesn't say anything about the poles. I haven't had time to call and ask but I would like an otter more than any other shack just because I haven't had anything wrong with my lodge but I don't have to worry about anybody else with a one man so it really doesn't matter to me it's the wife letting me get one. Sorry for the chatter just excited to get on the ice thanks to all!!

The recon is too small for a door. You would have to crawl out on hands and knees to use one on the recon. As they are they are so easy to flip up and down there is no need for a door on them, as you wouldn't need one on the smaller clams either.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
