Deer Camp Name and Your Tradition

Recommended Posts

We now call our group the "Buzzard Creek Hunt Club"

We are a group of 10 now. The 2 main guy's in our group started hunting together in 1961 50 years ago this year gringringrin

We are putting together a buch of pics and such from over the years and possibly some hats with "Bill and Freds Excellent Hunting Adventure" 1961- 2011. I started hunting with Bill and my dad(Fred) in 1977. My friend Jim joined us in 1984. Now Jim and I have son's that hunt with us. We have added Bill's son in law recently along with his nephew. My fried Don and cousin joined the group in the 90's.

Our traditions are to have a #1 Be Safe - Know your target, #2 Have a good time- with great meals and a cocktail or 3 after the hunt. The Meal tradition is Jim's wifes Lasagna on Saturday of the second weekend.

We have hunted the same land the whole time. It was the original homestead of my Great grandparents( now owend by Potlatch). We have stayed in the origanal home, in campers on the property and now we stay at the cabins on Lake Vermilion.

The name came from an old road sign someone found. It made its way up to the deer camp and we took pictures under it.

Good Luck , Hve fun and Be safe this season.

Steve

Our best tradition is that after my Dad shoots a buck, we take an old cape (with the head attached) from a buck shot a long while ago and drape it over some brush or a hay bale somewhere around my Dad's stand. We place it in a spot so that it is difficult to see, so he cant discern whether or not it is real. We have a pretty good success rate with him taking the shot because you just never know...it might be the real thing! He will swear up and down he knew it wasnt real.

My cousin and I will also take a drive around the block around my Uncle's land on Friday night just before sunset to further raise our hopes and fuel our dreams.

Whenever we tell the story of how we shot our deer, when we get to the part where we take the shot we always say, "I pulled up on it and said, You're dead." It stems from a hilarious story of how my Dad shot a doe one year.

Our camp is called "The Ponderosa" and has been in existence since the early 50's that our neighbors and now friends originally started and we took over in 1980. It is quite a shack with no convienences and the traditions of camp are typically chili night before opener (Not exactly the smartest choice for outhouse purposes with 9 guys, steak night, and now the ever so popular fish fry. I guess most of the tradition comes from naming the stands that we and our neighbors hunt, with such names as The Volvo, BumbleF#$@, Bucky Wucky, and others...

Camp is my house thats was my grand parents before and deer camp started back in the late 30's. Grandma use to do all the cooking with everyone bringing the food. The youngest would do dishes and everyone would help get wood put up for the winter. Several generations have come and gone but still have lots of memories and stories to tell.

My biggest tradition is I always carry a big Hershey bar as my dad always had one to share when we were in the woods together. I also do burgers in the woods at least one day as so we also did with dad when we were out all day. Dad would wrap burger in tin foil and throw a couple slices of bread in a baggie and when we would stop for luch would build a fire, cook the burgers and my brother and I would toast the bread on a stick over the fire.
