Peppermint and mice

OK, cooler weather is moving in and living in the middle of fields the little field mice are coming in. Traps have worked in the past but I would like to try something that will prevent them from even getting in the house.

I heard/read that 100% peppermint oil works.

But why 100% peppermint oil? Could I use extract? Or something else with the peppermint smell? I called a store to see if they had any oil and she told me they did but she had a suggestion of peppermint schnapps. If the smell is only the thing that detours them then she would use that because you can get a large amount cheap because the 100% stuff is expensive. But she was not sure if the smell is only thing in the 100% that keeps the mice away.

If I can use schnapps then I can use it for two purposes...the old saying is " While the mouse is away the cat will play".

We have had great luck with peppermint oil and nothing else. It is expensive but it doesn't take much on a cotton ball and you are good for half the winter.

Oh wow! I would hate to be driving down the road and have one run up my pant leg or across my lap!!
