Best minnow for jigging?

I'm sure I'll get a lot of different opinions, but I'm just wondering if there's one minnow that would work better for fall walleyes than others. Fatheads, shiners, rainbows, redtails, suckers? I don't buy shiners often because they're harder to keep alive. Rainbows seem to be more available in some areas, and they're pretty hardy, so I use them or fatheads mostly. When I can catch walleyes on firetiger crankbaits, which resemble no natural baitfish except maybe perch, I wonder how important minnow selection is.

For me, shiners are the way to go in the fall. Redtails are OK, but I personally go with shiners 99% of the time and generally don't have a problem keeping them alive - though I will put my minnow bucket in one of my live wells. Maybe that helps a little, i dunno

that's the great thing about fall. fish are becoming more friendly to fishermen with their fall feedbag comming, and bait such as fatheads and shiners can be kept lively longer due to the cooler temps and the colder water they are kept in. shiners have been my first choice this time of the year and of course fatheads work well also [and light pike suckers]. as far as gulp minnows are concerned i will admitt i haven't given them a fair shot in the fall. but from what i have heard these products are productive and should be given a chance. good luck.

I like shiners in the fall also. Mediums in the beginning (now) and huge shiner later. Then back to mediums before ice up. Red tails are better suited for deeper water rigging/jigging during the day. At night when a walleye creeps up, it's my firm belief that Rainbows are able to escape the Walleye because of it's hardiness and speed. 5" Swimbaits are better than anything at night in the fall though.
