stabilizing canoe

Recommended Posts

My partner and I have been hunting out of canoes since 1981. We hunt in a very mucky area. Our system is simple and safe. We carry three wooden closet rod poles about 10-12' long. They lay in the bottom of the canoe when paddling. When setting up our blind, we push them down into the muck so they stick up above the gunwale about 1.5', then use the black rubber bungie cords and do figure 8's around the 3 poles and the canoe thwarts. Very quick and stable. Two hunters (I'm 250lbs) jumping up to shoot and my 100lb lab leaping out of the canoe are never a problem.

Put two poles on one side, the third on the other side of the canoe. We find we rarely need 4 stake down poles, 3 are sufficient. You can even hang some camo material between the poles if cover is thin.....

a couple rigid yard stakes, or use your canoe paddles. push them down into the mud on each side of the canoe and then use a couple C-clamps to lock them to the sides of the canoe. works like a charm and is simple and cheap.

This is what i used to do, but would attach the paddles or poles to the canoe with rope instead of a c'clamp (Which i wish i would have thought of!)

What length of bungee cord do you use? Is it necessary to put a point on one end making it easier to push into the muck?
