fastening floor to the frame?

redhooks

Recommended Posts

Just finished beefing up the frame and am ready to put the floorboards on. Going to use advantech after reading good things about it here. Am wondering if anyone has any hardware recommendations to avoid screws breaking off in the frame. Is it better to run bolts all the way through. Also anyone use any sealant / caulk between the floor and frame? Thanks for any advice

On my shack (which I bought used) the floor is screwed down with 2" self tappers with wood screw type heads. They are flush with the floor.

The floor is also glued down.

I had a heck of time getting my spear hole cut and removed from the frame. Whatever he used sure worked!!

(The color of the adhesive looks creamy like liquid nails)

There are self-tapping screws specially made for going thru wood into metal. They have little "wings" on them that bore out a little extra wood so the threads dont catch and then break off when it hits metal. I have bought them at fastenal but i would think other stores would have them. If i remember right the brand i used was buildex.

Otherwise you could just use regular #14 self-tappers and pre-drill the wood and metal.

Either way i would use adhesive also.

The ones you speak of from fastenal are indeed Buildex brand. Usually they have a green coating that makes them compatible with treated plywood as well. They aren't cheap but work well and are worth the extra few cents IMO. Can't say I've ever seen them at other stores in particular tho.
