Depending on where you're planting (and when the frosts come) ...... you're cutting it close .......

And of course it depends on how quickly you'll get rain and how quickly your turnips will germinate.

Typically you're looking at 45 days at best and more likely 60 days for the turnips to mature --- so like I said, you're cutting it close. August or even late July is usually recommended for planting dates.

But ...... for a 1/4 acre on Sept 1 ...... I'd plant it right away and hope for the best. It's for sure not going to grow if you don't get the seed in the ground smile

In northern MN where my plots are located, I usually have to be planted in about the 1st or 2nd week of August to have much luck with a fall planting ..... ie. to have the plants put on enough growth to be a worthwhile foodplot for the wildlife. Any later than that and I'm likely to end up with tiny plants that get wiped out very quickly.

Thanks I was thinking of the 60 days that's what radishes normally take. I'll look to something else then, I have done my fall plots in early August before but they just burn up in the sugar sand around Isanti, my best luck has been around the beginning of September with the cooler weather and more rain.

I've put them in on the 1 of Sept before and had good luck. Here's the deal though, you will need rain right away for germination and the next 2 weeks look dry... fertilizer helps push them a bit faster also. I generally don't worry too much about the bulb. If thy're small they still get ate. I grow them for the tops... deer lover tender young turnip tops right after a frost! And as stated above, an early frost will shut down growth with small plants of little value. Have you tried winter wheat?

Good Luck!

Ken
