How to fish the bowl lake

Recommended Posts

I have found several lakes that have decent walleye populations according to the DNR, several of these lakes are the bowl type lakes 15' max in the middle, no points, no structure, weedlines to 6'. and the majority of the lake is the maximum depth. How do you fish these? It is racking my mind!!!!

Bowls can be tough to figure out due to lack of structure. This is also the key to fishing them! Look for any areas that have a gravel or rocky substrate, current areas where creeks flow in or out, defined weedlines or any change in depth from the surrounding areas. Drift live bait rigs, troll spinner rigs or longline cranks. to cover water and keep going untill you contact fish. Is the water stained or clear? Try to fish during the early morning and evening hours when the fish are more active. Talk to people that have fished the lake and ask about presentations. Ask the bait shop owner if they have recommendations. Good luck!

No lake is perfectly round or uniform from shore to basin. There has to be a different area than the rest. No matter how small or meaningless it looks on paper it will be a big deal under the water. Smaller lakes will do well in the spring and fall and shut down in the summer and winter. First Ice and Last Ice are sure bets on these types of lakes.

Buy SideImaging Sonar, you'll find the tiniest structure, and that is where you will likely find these fish.

You might want to research the area and its geology if the glaciers created the lake chances are the North end will be a tad deeper. This might be a starting point. Also if it is a glacial lake you will find bands of gravel through it you should also find a few rocks too. Look at the surrounding landscapes and that might tip you off to some subtle features that might hold fish.
