How to paint a perch crankbait: step by step

Recommended Posts

It seems painting crankbaits has gotten a few people interested, so I thought I would try to do a step by step of how I paint a crankbait. The perch pattern is probably the easiest one to do. So here goes. If anyone has additional questions, feel free to ask anything. I will try to answer the best I can.

I start out by sanding a blank bait to get rid of any imperfections (I just blow it off real good before starting to paint.). Then I tape the bill.

I paint the whole bait white. I use Createx paint.

Then I cover the top and sides with a pearl yellow. Don't worry about covering the bottom as that will get painted white at the end. Between all coats of paint I use a hair dryer to cure the paint.

Then I hit the sides lightly with gold and fade a green into the sides from the top.

Then I use Tulle fabric that I hold tightly to the bait using alligator clips. You can get tulle at any fabric store. There are a couple different sizes available with different size holes/patterns. I also like to use a puffy loofa thing that you use in the shower. If you cut the string in the middle you get about 10 yards of material. I like to use tulle/shower sponge stuff to give the bait a scale pattern look.

Then I shoot a grayish color for the stripes and top. I use a comb for the stripes on the sides. I fade from the top down the sides a little bit too.

Then I paint the bottom white with a little orange under the throat.

All done painting.

Just add eyes and clear coat. There are a couple options for clear coating lures. The cheapest/easiest way is to get a clear 30 min. epoxy and brush it on, let it hang and fish. You can add a touch of glitter as well to the epoxy. Or there are a few other ways that get a little more spendy and storage can be an issue too.

I didn't know things existed that are named "Tulle" and "Puffy Loofa". smile

Then again I don't get out of the Cave much.

Your tutorial and work are very nice.

Thanks for taking the time to post. I appreciate and enjoy viewing it.
