Bear Calling/Bear Urine

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever tried calling in a bear while hunting over there bait? Not sure if this would work or if it's just a plain dumb idea. My other question is has anyone ever tried using bear urine. I think that using bear urine would work good for a boar that is coming in to the bait after its dark all the time. This might bring them in earlier, because I am assuming like all other big game, they can tell how fresh it is. Your thoughts?

My (non-hunting) experience with black bears tends to make me consider them the ultimate scaredy-cats. They sure seem to spook easy, and run. I suppose that's why treeing them with dogs is so effective.

What kind of calls would you use? Injured prey calls? That's the only thing that I can think of, but surely their noses are a stronger sense (and a stronger draw) than their ears.

About 20 years ago I had a bear that would never show himself in the daylight so, I figured what the heck...I brought along my Sceery varmint calls and about 4 hours before dark I got on it...it only took about 5 minutes of calling and I heard brush being thrashed, branches being broken, moaning and teeth popping...I was bowhunting, so I stopped calling and got ready...I got a couple of glimpses of the bear but he would not come into the bait site and give me a shot...he hung around for about half an hour or so, then all was quite again...I sat there until it was pitch dark and he never showed again...We did end up getting him on the second to last day of the season...he started hitting a little earlier when all the natural food was gone...He was a brute...475# field dressed on the elevator scale...Calling will work for bears, but I would think it would be better on a spring hunt with perhaps a fawn distress call...It did work and with a rifle I may have had a little better chance but the foliage was so thick all I could really see was his head and ears from time to time as he wouldn't come out...pretty sure he had me pegged.

Calling will work but like fox said i believe sprng time is better, plus u have to lay on all the time, bear have short attention span an come on string to the sound of prey species in distress but as soon as it stops they tend to loose interest, sitting on the ground would be better than in a stand but in open country is really worth trying cause you can see the bears behavior an how it reacts to teh call. Sow in heat urine will work but by fall the rut is over, breeding starts in mid may to june. Bringing fecal matter form one site to another to spur competition has be know to work very well.
