Nice big nodule!!!

I'm a fan of keeping them whole but if you wouldn't have discovered it more than likely it would have been crushed.

Some guys cut them in half and some will cut a little off one side.

Personally, I'd more than likely keep it as is.

Techno, I've always been curious. I love the pics shared of the rock before its picked, but in these cases are they usually coming from a pit, or a beach, maybe landscapping? Always find myself wondering what the general background of the pictures is.

Thanks and nice rock

Techno, that's a real nice agate, nice find!

Most bigger agates will be found in gravel pits and farm fields. This Spring with all the rain was great for most people who got in the fields to look. This Fall produced some nice field agates but with the early snow it shut down the agate season a bit early. On a social media site a lucky hound found a 2lb 15oz bander in a farm field and within two weeks got $575 for it on that really big online auction site.

Some people like techno have what I like to call an agate eye meaning they have a special ability to see agates that others will walk right by. The only other thing I can think of is he invented some sort of agate detector (like a metal detector) and he simply waves it around and finds agates up to a foot down!!! Known Techno for over 25 years super nice guy!!!

Oh, most avid agate hunters will keep most of there hot spots top secret, the same is true of morel mushroom hunters. A friend of mine will take me to all his fishing hot spots and even his secret smelt spot in Ashland that can yield over 2,000 lbs of smelt in a couple hours but HE WILL NEVER TAKE ME MOREL MUSHROOM HUNTING!!!

God blessed me with some great agates this wknd. Like the agate in my last posting, i was surprised at how awesome the other side of an agate can be. Also, in the last set of pics, i found that agate sitting in its own puddle of melted ice on a lake (first time that has ever happened to me)! If u zoom in and look close, u can just see the blue of the agate in the bottom right side. The first agate is 5.5oz, the second is 4.3oz and the true "laker" is 13.5oz full-46842-51502-2014_11_2416.23.41.jpg

Went out this past wknd and God blessed me again with some more nice ones. This is the best and biggest of the bunch. I love the husk on it because it the limonite looks kind of like gold flake and whats cooler is that the whole husk is made up of small eyes joined together. If u can zoom in, u will see what i am talking about. Weighed 15.5ozfull-46842-52100-2014_12_1520.05.12.jpg

Starting to get the itch to get back out... finally getting a change to run through some of the finds from last year...

No polish or oil on either... not sure what you'd call the one on the right, never seen anything like it.

Sorry - Bad lighting on the photos. I gotta work on that.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
