Gas Water Heater Vent Pipe- 45 deg angle???

McGurk

Recommended Posts

I recently replaced a gas water heater, along with new di-electric unions and a shutoff vlave for the inlet side. The old 3" vent pipe went straight up 12", and took a 90 deg bend to go another 12" to the furnace flue. The old horizontal run had some back pitch that I wanted to get rid of, along with a poor connection to the vent hood on the water heater. So I added another elbow and just angled the run up the whole way to the old connection. All joints have 3 screws in them, and are taped over. Here is a photo of the completed work:

An inspector had said that there needed to be a 45 deg angle bend out of the vent hood on the water heater, but I can't see that written down anywhere in any codes or installation instructions. The only thing I can find is that you need 1/4" of rise per linear foot of vent pipe away from the water heater. I have all of that in the entire run, but I wanted to get some more opinions before I approach getting the inspector back out here. Thanks in advance!

The vent connector end termanation where the water heater hooks in with the furnace has to be a 45 degree Y saddle....now it is just a straight saddle connection, which are now an illegal connection....you can get these at any mom and pop hardwarte or box store

Put some screws in your vent hood. Looks pretty loose to me. That thing comes loose, you won't be venting into the chimney but into your house. A couple of 1/4 inch screws into the holes that the vent hood mount into the water heater will be fine. Don't need to take the vent hood out, just run the screws in along side of the "legs" of the vent hood.

2 of the 4 legs have screws, but you can't really see them from the pic. Thanks for the heads-up, though! Inspection had no issues with it. Thanks for all of the free advice! HSO helps another poor soul...
