Boat blind - Build or buy?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to convert an old 14 lund fishing boat into a duck hunting rig for this fall. What kind of blind would your recommend? I have been looking at cabela's northern flight blind as it looks decent for the money, although it looks like it may be better suited for a john or modified v john? Has anyone had good success making their own blind for a v-hull? I have seen a lot of posts about people making scissor blinds but not really sure how to do it. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Nate last year I re-did my blind and it was way cheaper building my self of course It was a bit of time involved and I have a little knowledge of sewing but its not that hard the sisssor type blind is real easy to build also.

If your gonna be in my area anytime soon you can look at mine all yo want for Ideas

I did build one for a friend that used an older 16 ft lund alaskan and it turned out great but no pics.. sorry

Heres a couple of pics of what I did last year.

You can kinda see how mine is laid out for the its really not a sissor but similar

Elwood, that looks great. A lot like the Northern Flight blind we have.

We tried several versions of di-it-youself blinds, and finally got a good deal on Cabela Northern Flight blind at their tent sale, and I gotta say, I would even pay full price for it over doing it myself again. We have 16' v-hull and it works great. 4 clamps and you have it on/off in a minute or two. The steel is all sturdy, unlike some of our conduit attempt, haha!

We did drill a few more holes in the support, for more variety of "close-ed-ness" at the top depending upon situation. I would highly recommend the Northern Flight. Some of the other well known brands looked nice too, but one thing I noticed is that several of them need you to drill holes into your boat. For us, we use it for fishing as well, so didn't like that option, or the $600 price tag, ha!

Good luck.

Wow Elwood! That is quite the setup you have there. Looks like you picked up a mudmotor as well! I really like the bench box you have in the middle. My boat looks like a life raft compared to that. The blind looks great as well. You could stay out all day and sleep in that thing!

I think I might go with the northern flight blind. It seems like a lot less work to me. BoxMN, do you have the quick flip top on yours? I wonder if cabela's will be doing their "spend 500 get 150 gift card" deal this year.

Nice blind. I bought an avery from cabelas a few years ago and its not holding up so well. Where they crimped the tube to fit into the next tube is breaking. Both centers and back. From the weight of the reeds and blind material. It will be an easy fix but I am thinkin that a good home made one would be better after making one and owning one. I am still yet to be satisfied with anything I have seen to date but I am thinking I have found it here.
